...and your choices WERE LIMITED TO the S&W 645/745/4506, S&W M&P .45 or any 1911 of your choosing, WHICH and WHY would be your choice. Caveat: this .45 would be your EDC, HD, target, hunting, 'do-it-all' handgun.

Let the discussion begin!

Been there, done that actually. I have more 1911s now, but when I was down to just one .45 in the house, the one I kept was a more or less stock circa 1978 Series 70 Colt full sized blued. I was four years old when it would have left the factory and it had a past life as an IPSC gun if I recall correctly. Still in great shape.

If I were purpose buying a gun to have as my only .45, I'd likely opt for one of the upper tier custom guns from Colt, but again I'd stick to full size and steel frame. (Going custom would simply buy the "smoothness" that my old one achieved long ago.)

The weight has never bothered me and steel frames seem durable. (I have one GI mixmaster that has a 1913 Colt frame. I would like a Commander style rounded hammer, but that is more of an affectation related to looks than anything else for me personally. Grips? Wood works. I've had guns a century or more old that still had functional wood on them, so it seems to hold up over time.

4566.
I have a couple of others, 1911, 4506s, 457, Witness Match, etc.
One for all purposes? 4566. Big enough to shoot a lot. Small enough to carry. Tough enough to hold up to continuous beatings. Accurate enough for distance shooting.
4566.

The one on the Right...No the Left,

No wait, the one on the Right is my primary, the one on the Left is a BUG.

There that's better...

A Colt Gold Cup series 70 or pre series 70.
Outstanding trigger, accuracy and reliable if tuned properly.

1911Sc
Aside from all personal defense daily concealed carry, with a .22 kit it serves as a accurate small game hunter.

Yassuh. This'un's from 1976, I believe. I bought it on 9-11-11.

Para Superhawg

Howdy,
If I was down to just one it would be my Superhawg.

This thing is uncharacteristic of Para Ord guns. It works and has not failed one time in several years of heavy use.
It came from the factory a clover-leafer at 25 yards.
It chronos good, I guess due to the 6" barrel.
It would be a bit much to carry concealed but I could if I needed to.
I have shot this gun successfully in Steel plate, Bowling pins, USPSA and PPC.
It is a gun I can pick up and use with faith that it will preform.
This is certainly no recommendation as I was so impressed with this one that I bought another PARA product and it had me pulling my hair out. The hammer and sear pin holes out of spec. You could not find a normal 1911 sear spring that would fit the gun as the slot was cut too low in the rear of the grip.(Or the sear/disconector might have been too high)
It had the same style power extractor of the flawless Superhawg but was unreliable and the nature of it kept me from being able to replace it with a standard ,tuneable 1911 extractor.
Anyway, the Superhawg is staying around and my favorite all around .45
Thanks
Mike

You guys who said SIG P220 are cheating! That wasn't one of the choices listed... :p

Now, if you hadn't limited us to a fixed set of choices, I would have said my H&K USP Compact 45. Within the set of choices you did list, I would be torn between my Ruger SR1911 and a M&P 45. I love my SR1911, even better than my SW1911, but if it came down to just having one .45, I'd have to go with the M&P 45. It is lighter, easier to carry, I wouldn't care (as much) if it got some wear and tear, it is easier to maintain, and it is very reliable.

Thankfully, we aren't limited to just one!

You know, I really dislike all of these "If you could only have one.........." postings!

This is America and I can own anything I want!!!

Mine would be the 4506-1. Accurate, relaible, durable and looks good doing all that. Regards 18DAI

I will choose the Tecnema Master 2. It got a big magazine, a great sight-picture and it's accurate.

Ooops! Actually I wouldn't pick any of the choices.

As close as I can get to the chosen ones if it has to be a SW then it would be a 4513. Since it has to do everything. Now if someone will send me one I would appreciate it.:)

Have had a 4566 TSW and now a S&W 1911. Even with the couple hiccups I have had from my 1911, which are probably my fault with reloads--I'd take it in a heartbeat over the 4566TSW. Despite being less user friendly for field stripping, the 1911's grip angle/ergonomics are far better for me.
