I would choose an S&W 2011:
Remember the moonclip... need something to hold it in place. Recall the OP said you could only have one .45 ACP... at least it wouldn't jam/misfeed in a revolver! A great plus... when you shoot your one .45 ACP, you can still find some 2.5" .410's, .45 Colts, .45 Schofield, heck, even some .45 GAP - and it'll work.... Da Guv-nah rules!

was going to start a thread asking who had a Les Baer Premier ll which would be my choice. Every review states that it's superlative.

My Les Baer PII w/1 1/2" factory target.
I would want my old King's Gun Works/Colt Commander, or a similar S&W 1911PD. Steel guns are just too heavy to haul around all the time.
The Commander is fine for everything except formal target shooting. (I don't hunt with a pistol.) I am not sure how impossible it is to use one for casual target shooting. I've shot a lot more paper than anything else with mine over the years, and it is still doing fine. It has probably fired more light loads with H&G #68s than anything, and it has fired a bunch of them.
Every so often I get tempted to try one of the new 5" 1911s with the aluminum frames, but have always been able to fight off the urge. Not sure there is much to be gained there. The Commander model handles almost everything I need a .45 for quite nicely.

A Colt, modified in the 80's with a K frame sight and good trigger job.
I couldn't even afford a holster, so I had 'em add a clip and "Mexican" carried.
Still a good choice for a "if I could only take one" 45.

This would be it. I dont consider myself proficent with a auto even though I have owned this one for close to 35 or 40 years. I have had a couple others too. This is a highly worked over remington-rand by pachmeyer. It is accurate, micro sights etc. Probley built for bullseye more than combat. I just havent worked hard with it. I should.

I would have to go with my Les Baer TRS. It's more accurate than me and 100% reliable with everything I've ever fed it.

An old Colt commercial model. Because I'm hung up on classics.
Given the choice of ANY .45 I'd take a custom 1917 S&W. Rugged and reliable, and it probably won't jam. Given the parameters of the question, without a doubt a high end Wilson Combat. I just plain like 'em though I doubt I'll ever afford one. I currently have only one ACP and it's a Sig P250. It needed a little tuning to run right but it is an accurate and good handling gun.
