"Illegal street racing"

The so-called street racing is just a pile of bovine manure. I raced, but at track where everything is controlled for safety. I used to call Laguna Seca my home away from home. The infamous turn 8; The Cork Screw. When you take The Cork Screw just right, you know that you have accomplished something.

That made me think of Monterey during the Concours d Elegance. Never saw anyone doing doughnuts there.

Its not going away. Many departments have a no pursuit policy for traffic violations so if the cops respond the most that will happen is the idiots will drive away and start up somewhere else.

Thank your fellow citizens. If there is a pursuit and it ends in a crash (as many do) or the pursued car smashes an innocent party a jury of your peers will most likely hit the city with a massive judgement. If the pursuit was contrary to policy the officers will be fired as a minimum and likely be prosecuted.

One news report says, "Members of the car clubs have said it’s a lifestyle."

Another example of spoiled brat culture and the corrosive effect of not letting cops do their jobs, and if they do, the prosecutors failing to do theirs.

The west side of Washington is rapidly turning into a complete hellhole, and we are starting to get some of that crud here.

Been a big problem in the Denver area for a while now, both cars and motorcycles. They will fill up I-25, the north/south highway through the metro area and block all lanes. They get very aggressive if you try to get past, make it impossible to get off the highway-just basic p.i.t.a. punks causing trouble

When I was a kid many years ago we called it "The Midnight Drags". When the cops came we scattered in 4 directions. I went to the Bonneville races in 1952, Didn't race as I was a pitman. Changed oil & tires Our car turned 142.51 MPH in the flying mile & wound up in 6th place in Comp. Coupes class.. AAH, good memories for sure.

About three years ago the small town I live in(pop 1100) did away with their police force and turned enforcement over to the county. I now see a Deputy about once a week. The local punks seem to think that this means there are no more traffic laws in town and having mufflers on their cars is a option.

Here in Ohio:

Ohio makes street racing or drag racing a serious misdemeanor offense. Under some circumstances, it can also be a felony. The long-term consequences for a conviction may include:

A jail sentence,
Costly fines,
Loss of your driver’s license,
Points on your driver’s license,
A permanent criminal record,
Increased car insurance rates,
Greater likelihood of being found negligent in a lawsuit if your street racing resulted in an accident.

I don't hear about or see much about street racing as cops around here are quick to cite.

Street racing is a HUGE problem in ABQ. There've been a lot of accidents. Earlier this year, there was school bus full of kids that got hit by a racer and rolled over.

School bus crash result of illegal street race

They've also have done rolling road blocks to they can do their tricks.

The above video show them doing this on Interstate 25, in the middle of the city, in broad daylight! They don't seem to be too worried about being caught.

I guess we can thank the movies and TV that glorify street racing. Fast and Furious and Street Outlaws on Discovery. That and very little if any traffic enforcement.

This sort of thing is all the rage now across the country. I'm fairly certain it's being encouraged and organized via social media. Here's a recent news report from Baltimore...

The last time I was on I 5 the "flow of traffic" was 83mph. My Lincoln was just purring along.

An interesting and timely thread! Saturday night was very pleasant and warm here but apparently the warm weather caused a testosterone storm. There is a shopping center about 1 mile from my home where "car clubs" like to gather on weekend nights to show off their latest and loudest acquisitions. The noise was incredible from about 8 PM until about midnight when I retired to bed

I emailed the city council and police chief very politely with the information and asked that they respond with a plan of action rather than a boilerplate response. Based upon my email I was contacted this morning by the PD Officer in charge of the traffic division and he was working with the property owner to post "No Loitering" signs on the property as apparently they don't have enforcement authority until such signs are posted. After that is done the PD will install cameras in the area and send $100 citations to violators via mail, a second violation will be $750. This was done in another area of town and was very effective.

I am not in any way critical of folks who own performance cars as I have owned several in my life but am appalled by those who have no consideration or respect for community residents.

A bit off topic but the cars that used to sound like an angry hive of bees seemed to have been replaced by Detroit iron as the latest status symbol to disrupt otherwise rather peaceful communities.

Hummm, the JAX Fl. area has several really nice car shows. No punks acting stupid regardless of their cars. Show at Avenues mall has about 2000 vehicles including military vehicles. Another very nice car show is at Trout River park on SR16. Back in late 60’s- early 70’s we used to “ cruise the strip” in Va. Beach, don’t recall any stupid acts as the VBPD was always there. Heard that for many years the city has cameras installed, can not “ cruise” more than once every half hour.

Jax Beach had serious cruising until some time in the ‘90s. I enjoyed going out there with my windows down and just seeing all the people. I don’t recall any trouble, just people enjoying the evening. But they permanently blocked off a bunch of streets to put a stop to it. Now the beaches are becoming just another hood.
