Two tiered speed limit?

Copied from Squarebutts post:

"As others have said, stay out of Illinois if you can. If you can't avoid IL, watch your speed, and beware of the two-tier speed limit. I got my first speeding ticket in 30 years on I 70 while towing a box trailer at 60 mph on a stretch of road marked 65/55. It was in the middle of the plains, flat as a pool table, and every vehicle was flying past me. I had the out-of-state plates, though. On the return trip I never went over 54 mph and got a lot of negative reaction from my fellow motorists."

I got three notices from Illinois that I failed to pay tolls outside of Chicago. I had PAID them. I sent in my rebuttal, etc. No matter.

Currently suspended in IL and can care less. IIRC the fines and costs for the three under a dollar tolls amount to just short of $500 .

What a scam.

I got pulled over for going too slow on I57. I was doing the speed limit and everyone was blowing by me like I was standing still. Trooper asked me why I was going so slow. I asked him if I should break the law like everyone else was apparently doing. He couldn't answer me with a straight face. Then I asked him if he really lit me up so he could check if I was DUI. He told me to have a good day and stay safe.

Here in the southern part of The People's Republic of IL, the speed limit is 70mph on interstate highways.

Folks regularly drive 75-80mph....

Yeah, a friend once told me up around Chicago that the trick is to be neither the fastest nor the slowest car on the road, and it'll keep you in the clear.

Here in the central part of the state, 70mph is a pretty good crusin' speed.

They are not the only state like that. The more surprising issue is that they define "truck" for the purpose of the speed limit as anything registered to gross over 8K, which means a large # of pickups and vans will be stuck at 55. It also applies to RVs or anything pulling a trailer. It amazes me that you even saw a trooper, let alone got a ticket for 5 over.

Frank237: unless Illinois has neglected to report the suspension to your home state as they are required to, you are not just suspended in Illinois.

You don't ever want to go to Texas, then. The speed limit seems to be at least ten over, no matter what the limit actually is. On the toll road between Austin & San Antonio, a good part of the toll road has an 80MPH speed limit, & in one section its 85MPH. I'll be cruising at 85 & I'll still get passed like I was sitting still.

hey we just returned from NOLA.. i thought Illinois was bad until now.
two things we noticed are that in La, even with the troopers and local pd, is that the speed limit(in town or out) and turn signals are more of a suggestion than the law....

They have fixed the split speed limit in most areas, but in the counties surrounding Chicago, it's still in effect. Mostly 65 for cars, 55 for trucks. 70 for everybody most everywhere else.

Other states that do this are CA, OR, IN and WA. Used to be a bunch more, but a truckers' organization (OOIDA) has spent quite a lot of time educating legislators of the dangers of split speed limits.

I'd prefer they just banned trucks from any lane other than the right and made it illegal for them to pass anyone else... But that's probably a whole 'nother thread lol ;)

Military vehicles are the priority users of the Interstate system (official title is something like "Interstate Defense Highway system"); commercial vehicles next. Passenger cars are essentially parasitic users. If everyone would remember that one must keep right except to pass (with VERY few exceptions, like I 30 west of Little Rock), and learn about the physics of driving around trucks, we would all be better off. I admit it is frustrating to be around some under-powered, over-governed, glorified yard spotter who is trying to pass some other truck at 1.2 MPH faster, but that's not going to change.

The state we always go around no matter the extra time involved.
