Went with a friend to a gun store this morning. He wanted a snub nose .357, but fortunately the GS owner talked him out of that and into a 442. Of course I just can't go into a gun store, even with no money in my pocket, and not look around.
This store is pretty large in terms of volume of sales, and that includes sales to local area PDs. In the used case he had a well worn 5906 trade in. Price was reasonable for MA considering the magazine restrictions for hand guns. Condition was typical, lots of holster wear. He also had a 3913, which I looked at, but it wasn't a NL or even LS, so I passed. Next up was a nice condition 908, but I thought it was a bit pricey and since I have a 3914, I wasn't interested. I thought I was done, but out of the corner of my eye I spotted it. A very nice looking 5904, marked at $400.00 with one magazine, no box. Maybe a bit high in most of the country, but again it's a high capacity firearm. "I don't need that, I have a 5906 already."
I walked away, walked back, and it was just staring me in the eye in all of it's square trigger guard glory.
My friend knew the owner of the story growing up decades ago when they were kids. My parents sort of knew the family, but I didn't know any of them. He gave my partner a good deal on the 442, so I just, out of curiosity you know, asked what he'd do on the 5904. I should have known better, so it was $370.00 out the door with an extra magazine. My friend completed the paperwork and I handed my license to the dealer and filled out the 4473. Then it was down to the bank to use the ATM.
On the way there my friend commented that a few years ago he'd have suggested professional help if he saw me do that. Now, he's a gun owner and after paying for the 442 (his second gun) he's starting to think about his next purchase.
No doubt he'll be asking me for tips on convincing his wife that all those guns she sees are actually mine.
Goodness help us next year when our wives get their licenses!
It's not a problem if I don't admit it's a problem, right?
