Possibly the Smith Wesson web site? Google images may also be helpful.

Just looking at a shelf of 4" S&W revolvers, they nearly all look the same, except for adjustable sights, and without knowing the caliber could be a 32, 38, 44, 357, 22RF, 22Mag, etc. Very few could tell the difference without seeing the caliber mark. But, study the difference of J Frame, K Frame, N Frame, or X Frame. Then within each of these sizes are dozens of different models, Then there are the models that have been added and dropped over the past 160 years.

Get the "Book", Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson.

I was able to get my copy of the S&W Catalog, 4th ed. from Barnes and Noble. Probably the best overall reference book for all S&W firearms.
