I purchased some inexpensive independence .357 158Gr JSP. about every other round wouldn't fire. It was as though my firing pin on my 686 wasn't depressing the primer all the way. Upon further inspection, the primers were barely dented. On my reloads which I fired just before, I had no problems. Anyone have issues like this? I want to make sure that my pistol isn't malfunctioning. Thanks in advance

Has your mainspring screw been backed out to lighten up the DA pull? If so, screw it back in.

If not, I'd salvage what components I could from this ammo and chalk it up to a good learning experience.

I am using federal primers. Also, Forgive my ignorance, but what is the main spring?

I've shot a good amount of .38 special and .357 Magnum Independence Ammo and it all worked fine for me in several revolvers including a M686. Independence ammo is the very cheap Federal line ao ammo which is made in South America instead of it being made here like Federal and American Eagle ammo.

You said the primer looked hardly hit, that's probably your problem, not the ammo itself.

Take off the grips and you will notice a small screw at the bottom of the frame compressing the main spring. Tighten this screw and your problems should be solved. This screw should remain tight. I even loc tite it in place so it won't unscrew during a match.

i have great results with independence 9mm ammo, its basically all i will shoot out of mine. Sorry its giving you problems. I even shot 50 rounds of 4 different manufacturers against it for a local gun test and independence did as well as any of them.

The main spring screw was out quite a bit. How should I adjust it? Should I tighten it all the way or is there a torque setting?

Well, I did all that. I ended up pulling the cylinder and extractor to fix a few cylinder releasing quirks. Thanks for the help as always.
