Interchangeable front sight install help! 686 ssr

I've used the sights on my 629 Classics and 500 that just push in. Have you tried to contact SDM?

No I haven't because the documentation that came with it said to be installed by a competent gunsmith only. I figured if I called they would just say the same thing.

It was a pain in the *** removing the stock sight because the spring that holds it in is hard to compress. I had to use a hammer and plastic punch to get it out.

What is the problem you're having? I had to stone the sides of the flange on my SDM fiber sight when I installed it on my SSR; it was a hair too wide.

If the instructions direct you to use a qualified gunsmith, I have feeling that maybe you bought the wrong sight - one for a pinned front sight, rather than the interchangeable front sight.

Is your front sight pinned or a dovetail? If your front sight is dovetailed like in the pic below, and you bought a pinned SDM sight, then the SDM is not designed to fit your gun.

If it is pinned like the pics below you should be all set. Remove the pin and the old sight, put the SDM sight in the front sight slot and drill a hole through the sight where the pin goes through, then re-install the pin.

I replaced the factory front sight on my 586 L Comp with an SDM Fiber Optic sight. Drilling the new sight is the hard part. You may be best having a gunsmith do it for you. They should charge $30 to $50 to do it.

Top is the SDM sight bottom is the stock sight I removed from the gun

Problem is that since the rear has to go in first due to the length of the SDM sight I can't tilt it in at an angle enough for the front of the dovetail to clear the roll pin.

Here is the gun:

The solution is quite simple, take a file and file the point of the front dovetail back a bit so it it has a flat where it was once pointed. I do this to all my interchangeable sights specifically because it's a bit of a pain to remove or insert these sight if the front dovetail is pointed.

Note, you do not have to remove much material from that tip to make a huge difference, just 1/64 inch will make a world of difference. In addition because the surface that locks the sight in is near the midpoint of the ramp on the front dovetail blunting that tip will NOT have any functional effect.

Looks like you may have to remove the roll pin to get it in. I just installed a Hiviz on my 325TR and it was almost too long to install without removing the pin. The one I installed on my 629 Classic was easier.

This worked! Thanks for the help!
