Interesting comments today from a gun shop

Shame on some of you guys . . . the uninformed folks have to learn somehow and from somewhere.

Take out the word "handgun" and replace it with "power saw" and that would be me. When I walk out of a hardware store I only hope the experienced carpenters aren't as harsh.

Good morning all,
I am 50 years old and been around firearms all my life shoot 1 to 2 times a week. Took my grandson to his youth firearms safety course yesterday and I learned some things. Guess I don't know everything, it was a great day.

90% of being smart is knowing what you're dumb at, and close to 90% of what you think you know is wrong.

If the guy and the kid walked out of the store without buying something, it says to me that they knew they needed more info before making a decision. Good for them.

Good point about carpenter's tools. I can't tell you how many bad and useless power tools I bought before I learned enough to minimize purchase mistakes. Except for reciprocating saws. For the life of me I can't buy a single reciprocating saw with the features that make it appropriate for any job. I guess maybe that's the answer: you need different sizes and designs of recipro saws for different tasks.

I'm in the same boat as MYM&P; been around guns a long time, reload, shoot a lot, and will be 50 at the end of the month. I convinced the wife to take the basic handgun safety course and thought I would take it with her for "moral support". I learned (or relearned?) a few things in the class. I may know a lot, but I certainly don't know it all. Be kind to those less knowledgeable than you, teach them with a respectful attitude, and maybe they will become safe, conscientious gun enthusiasts like the rest of us.

Skeeter Skelton had a story, on the subject of "beware the man with only one gun", about a friend of his that moved to Alaska. He had one gun. A Colt Police Positive 32/20.

Skeeter went to visit him, one time. The guy fed him moose, and there was a Kodiak rug on the cabin floor.

Skeeter said, "Now, I'm not claiming the he killed a moose and a Brown Bear with a 32/20 pistol, but he still only had one gun."

Gagage Sale find!!

Sheeter also spent a lot of time talking about Jug Johnson didn't he. We all know or have met ol' Jug at one time or another

Very true. I started with a screw driver, hammer, and old B&D circular saw. I now own an entire garage of wood working tools, all excellent brands. That didn't happen overnight. I've lent my advise and taught many a co-worker and stranger in the aisle of the local stores. But, that's how I learned myself, from others sharing.

And, as much as I've learned, I always remind myself that I have barely scratched the surface of knowledge. There are a LOT of guys out there who are vastly better than me. We're always learning and will never learn it all. So, we all should help each other.

Do you go into the hardware shop with an arrogance that says, " I know everything and you can't tell me anything?" That's what I see occasionally in the store where I work. Actually, most people are polite and appreciate assistance, but the ignorant ones are the ones I tend to remember.

When I don't know about something, I ASK FOR HELP, not tell everyone within earshot that I know it all.

I have found that some of the best customers are women who know very little about guns and are willing to admit it. They have no pretense and accept instruction willingly, without their egoes getting in the way. I also suggest they get Rolan Kraps book, "GUNS 101." He's David Steier in real life and has a very informative book for people starting out with guns.

Once, a guy came strutting into the shop with his wife/ girl friend, saying he wanted a Desert Eagle. I happened to have one that needed a rear sight. W hen he grabbed it, his eyes widened and he commented that it was heavy. I just said, "yes it is." and showed him something else.

Quite often, I have customers tell me that the people in our store are "very nice." I politely tell them that we are as nice as our customers let us. If they treat us like scum, we tend to return the favor.

All that being said, you REALLY can't fix stupid. Had a guy come in, looking for a 33 round mag for his gun. I asked him what kind of gun. He said "Nine Millimeter." I asked what brand of gun. He said, "Nine Millimeter." I explained that I couldn't get him a mag unless I knew which company made it. He got irate and stormed out the door.

Most of us have been fooling with firearms so long we tend to take a lot for granted. Sometimes it is good to remind ourselves none of us were born knowing it all. Believe me I have asked my share of basic questions and made more than one stupid decision. One day I will relate the story of the attempted great lion hunt.

Well said and I'm looking forward to hearing your tale.

When it comes to guns - I know I thought I was wrong once, turned out I was just mistaken.

So, stay up-stream..........

Well SHOOT!!!! I had some real zingers to burn the father and son with until I read more posts. Guess I'm just glad they didn't purchase and will hopefully get more (accurate) information about what they want and need before they do purchase. If not, there will be more lower-48(Alaskan term for continental US) bear poop in the woods and streams. refer to headline now......:)
