INTERNET SNUBBY MATCH

Count me in. I think weak hand double action at 15 yards is going to be very hard; I'll try it on a full sized pistol target and expect not to have all of them on hte paper. Probably use my old M&P: it's heavier and has a better grip.

Hope all is well with David R. He sure has put on some great matches.

I've had a couple of ideas about changing paramaters we don't usually consdier in snubby matches. I'd like to see a match requiring +P ammo in 38 Specials, or handloaded equivalent, and full charge loads in 357s, or handloaded equivalent. Couse of fire: one hand, either SA or DA, and a moderate range, say 7 yards. I think we'd be surprised at how the snubbies bounce with full strength loads. I'd have to use my light 638 with alloy frame, as my M&P is much too old for +P, and I imagine the recoil would be pretty strong. I don't see competitors generally using any other calibers, although I have used a S&W 317 and a Colt Banker's Special, both in 22LR, and didn't do well with either.

I'd also like to see a match fired on the standard 25 yard timed and rapid fire target; score rather than group size to count. Range 15 yard, single action, unsuported. No adjustable sights. This would have the advantage that one flier wouldn't kill a score, but the disadvantage that the group would have to be centered on the target. My snubbies seem to shoot where pointed; with a six o'clock hold, they're at the bottom of the bull or below it. So some serious kentucky windage and elevation would have to be applied, depending on where that particular pistol shoots.

Why don't you write up a match for next month's competition. I'm game for anything you or anyone else comes up with.

Went to the range today to try and redeem myself with the Mod 10 and the Mod64. I was able at least to keep all shots on an 8 1/2 X 11 sheet of paper, barely, this time. I'm right hand dominant but I practice a lot with my weak hand. Any way, for me, the match was challenging.
I'm underwhelmed by the competitive response I've gotten to this match after so many whined about the matches fading away. Your loss.

I guess you left the range about the time I got there. I didn't have high hopes, particularly DA at 15 yds. I used a full sized target, 24 inches X 30 inches, on purpose, as I wanted to catch all my wild rounds. I must have gone completely numb as I shot much better than I was expecting, except for one HUGE flier at 11 o'clock on the 15 yard phase of the left hand series. My specs: right hand: size 4 1/2 inches; left hand: size 13 1/16 inches (ouch); average: 8 13/16 inches. Incidently: my M&P is pretty scruffy looking, but it's not as bad as the attached picures make out.

I hope more people shoot in the snubby matches and don't give it up as a lost cause. There will be some interesting and challenging matches to follow. I will probably be hosting the October match and I will get the match details out soon.

Anybody have any news about David R? He seems to have vanished completely. I hope all is well with him and his family, and he's on vacation or something; not a catastrophe of some sort.

Sir, you are a fine handgunner. Sorry I missed you today, it began to sprinkle rain as we were leaving. Must not have lasted. I was going to try shooting that Rastoff Challenge 111 but was too tired to try, also didn't want to get my guns wet. Looking forward to shooting your Oct match.

September Entry

Made it to the range today. Here is my September entry. Shot with a Smith & Wesson Model 10-5, using Magtech 158gr LRN. Sorry for the crappy photo. Not much of a photographer. Looking forward to next months course of fire! Hope we get more participation next month too.

Wogentry, that is some pretty good shooting. You appear to do equally well with either hand.

Thanks, my accuracy comes and goes it seems with practice and prescription eyewear, but I've always been diligent about practicing with both hands. It was something my dad insisted on when I was younger.

October Snubby Match

In David R's absence, I will host the October Snubby Match. Let's shoot the Camp Perry Course, at least the slow fire stage of it. Course of fire: 10 shots; time limit, 5 minutes; range, 25 yards. Single action, one hand, no artificial support. To avoid favoring adjustable sighted snubbies, we'll shoot for group size, not numerical score on a target. Please measure the group size, from the center of the two most distant bullet holes, and report this number; I don't have the computer program that determines group size from a picture of the target. We all like to see pictures of targets with holes in them and pistols, so post these too, if you so wish.

Sixty years ago, when I was 22, I could clean this with a K-38. But I'm not 22 any more (Why does that country western song "I Don't Look Good Naked Any More" come into my head), and my 2 inch M&P is no K-38; so it should be a very sporting match.

Questions, comments, give me a PM or post them in this string. I'll be out of the net until Monday when I return from the Albuquerque Gun Show.

If you have a good idea for a snubby match, don't hide your light; please host the match and let us all try it out.

Hoboy, that's a short sight radius for 25 yards with one hand. How about 2 hands next time? At age 73 I was shaking the sights like fall leaves. Shot it this morning. Folks on the line at the club were sort of wondering what I was doing with a snub nose at 25 yards :~)

stu1ritter: 25 yards is approaching Paris Gun range for a 2 inch barreled revolver. That's good shooting. You're also brave (foolhardy?) for using a target center only. I went out today to practice and used a full sized target. I think they measure 20" X 24". Managed to keep them all on the paper but didn't shoot quite a well as you did (I'm 82). I'll try to post a target for score some time this week.

I shot both my 638 and my 1950's vintage 5 screw,2 inch, M&P. Came home from the Albuquerque gun show with a grip adapter for it, and it gives a better grip for my middle finger.

Nice revolver, incidently. Wish I had a snubby with adjustable sights. I like the grips, too.

Taroman: Yes, definitely. I have shot my 22 Banker's Special in previous matches. Incidently, very pretty pistol. I'm envious. I'd sure love to have an adjustable sight snubby, but haven't found one yet.

TAROMAN, I seem to count 12 hits on the target. Might have been a wee bit smaller group with the regulation 10 :~)
I'm gonna have to drag out my 34 and try this.
