iphone madness???

IMO, any person that stands in line waiting for the latest iPhone for hours has their priorities all screwed up. No way I would attempt that, as I have way too much business to attend to.

Look at those standing in line. That should tell you something.;)

But it's not much different than those that stand in line for ammo!

I'm a member of the "older generation" I guess. I have a Droid. It saves me an amazing amount of time each day being able to use it for work. It also allows me to work from anywhere just as a laptop does. That in turn allows me to have time to visit LGS's wherever I am and still "be at work". There are a lot of the new technology things that I like. Up to the minute streaming video to my phone of my Grandson hitting a home run when I couldn't be at the game? You betcha!

I wish phones were just that phones.
Too much BS on um imo.
Oh and the fingerprint thing yeah I can see that being a big brother thing. Instantly have access to the prints of a lot of folks. Hmmm Ill pass on a new Iphone

Just like guns, especially rifles, what happened to those? Many look like something out of a sci-fi movie loaded with plastic, the cheapest material you can manufacture after paper.

The new icons....

I'm a curmudgeon with an iPhone, I don't do lines either.Downloaded iOS 7 yesterday,what was Ivey thinking!!
That's blinding and incredibly feminine! I may have to give it to my daughter...

I'm closing in on my seventh decade here on planet earth and am certainly not the first in line for anything, nor do I care much for lines of any kind. BUT - I do like my iPhone 5 (my first iPhone). But I gotta say: those new iOS 7 icons suck like a chevy powered Hoover.

I love my iPhone BECAUSE I am not only a curmudgeon, but a misanthrope as well.

My iPhone gives me the power of freedom from talking to banal strangers.

I can search for something, find it, get directions turn by turn. Awesome.

I can be entertained at the DMV (or fill in the blank waiting room) by jumping on smith-wesson forum dot com ;-) or stream Netflix.

I can text instead of talk to communicate with a person I have to communicate with but don't want to talk to. Oh yeah, I'm talking to all those those folks who never shut up...

I can look up a movie tittle, find a theater, buy tickets, proceed to will-call and see the movie. No waiting.

I can put things on my agenda on the calender with alert alarms so I don't forget. I have never missed anyone's birthday since getting my iPHone (my wife thinks all of a sudden I'm a genius).

In short, my iPhone makes my life a lot easier and less dependent on others.

What's not to like about that?

I bought an older model iPhone for $29.95 [plus extra phone charges] to use in business. Now they want me to download a new operating system. GRRRrrr....just got comfortable using the old system.

I guess I'll wait a month or so to make sure the bugs are out.

My wonderful spouse uses an old flip phone. It's all that is wanted or necessary. I have a very smart spouse!

I have a Samsung Galaxy S4 but all the above holds true. And not only that...I can download a app that scans barcodes and find where the cheapest price is for that product and order it or go pick it up.

I can make instant check deposits to my account.

I can download a app that instantly turn my phone into a flashlight if I were to need one

...Or if you like navigating by the srars, app that shows me the stars that are in the location of where I point my phone.

An app that shows in real time where the cheapest gas is in my vicinity.

A few years ago I was in another town 2hrs from home and needed to find a Walmart. Ive been there before and knew where to go. When I got there it was closed. A quick search on my phone showed me that they had moved several miles away. At the same time I got the address and GPS directions

And much much more.

a little story

I have an I-phone they gave me at work. I'm too cheap to pay for one myself. My brother was on his way for a visit when he called me saying his truck had quit on him after cutting out several times. He was sitting near Durkee, Oregon, 7 pm on a Friday night, no cheap way to get services as the area is very rural. Powerstroke diesel, in a dually pickup. He figured it must be the fuel filter because it would start but wouldn't rev, then quit. So I get in the car, stop by the parts store for a filter and head up, a 100 mile drive. I get there, the filter swap is quick on those engines, engine fires up, takes the throttle, looks like we are good to go. But it quits when he puts it in gear. Still has the same problem. We are stumped, it is getting dark, and it is looking like an expensive tow, plus having to find a competent mechanic on the weekend in eastern Oregon, etc. I remembered I grabbed the I-phone on the way out of the house. Googled "powerstroke diesel cutting out" and got many hits, all saying bad cam position sensor, complete with directions showing where it is. Next step is google auto parts store Baker Or. Turns out they roll up the sidewalks in Baker after 6. So tried Ontario and found an O'Reilly's with one in stock, 25 bucks. They stay open until 10 pm and I can just make it. Went and got the part, put it in, problem solved, life is good. Long story short, as someone mentioned above, the smart phone is a tool, and a very useful one at times, as this is only one example. It saved us a lot of time and my brother a lot of money. So we can be stubborn and not accept advances in technology to our loss because it isn't the way we've always done it or we can take advantage of it to our benefit. I long ago figured out my take on it. I do feel sorry for those that have nothing better to do than have their nose buried in them all the time, though.

Of course we all managed to survive without an iPhone prior to 2007. However, the conveniences and efficiencies are nothing less than spectacular for those who use them.

Just one example: In the olden days I used to periodically stop my car to call my stock broker from a payphone and find out what was going on, then make decisions with limited information. Now I have real time quotes, news, stock alerts, and execute trades right from my iPhone. For those who understand, it's nothing less than a miracle to have such information in the palm of your hand compared to how things used to be.

I find curious those who scoff at having a world of mobile information, communications and entertainment at their fingertips. It's seems as if they consider it a badge of honor to shun it... As they drive around lost with their outdated tattered paper maps unfolded across their lap and steering wheel, they shake their arthritic fist at young punks telling Siri: Take me to... :D

I personally don't like iphone cell phones. i have been a cellphone user/owner since i was 18 years old, and the cell phone that i currently have is 6 years old and it serves me well. I shall keep it until it falls apart and becomes useless.

I don't need a ground-penetrating radar unit or a bomb disposal robot. Might be nice, or at least interesting, to have those things. But at 76 I don't require them to ease how I live my life, and can't afford them or an iPhone on Social Security. This is not the same as shunning progress or being a Luddite.

It's difficult and painful for me to make an "arthritic fist" anymore (one big reason I don't text). If I could I wouldn't shake it at you. Enjoy your advanced electronics, and I'll enjoy my old-fashioned wireless laptop.

Makes me think about people in line for hours waiting to get into gun shows, then waiting to buy overpriced ammo and AR-15s.

Most of those people are new to firearms and have no clue what they're buying. I've seen that here in FL and turned right around when I saw the lines. No way I'm standing in any line like that for overpriced items. It would have to be deals to good to pass on, LOL

Right there is a good reason to get a new iPhone (though not for you due to your earlier stated financial limitations). But for others...

Using Siri, you just talk and Siri does the typing of text messages for you. You can even post messages here the same way and save yourself from arthritic finger pecking on a keyboard. Siri voice recognition on my iPhone is lightyears ahead of what came packaged with my iMac.

iPhone (or any of the smartphones) ... it's for old and young alike. :)
