Is $599 a Good Price for an Excellent 1006? BOUGHT- PIC ADDED!

Greetings,

A LGS has a very nice, low round count 1006 for $599.

Is that a good price?

I really like how it feels in my hand, and would be my first S&W auto.

What do you folks think of the 1006?

1006 = great 10mm, built like a tank, expensive to shoot unless you reload. Price is so-so, does it have a box, how many mags? For me $600 for just the gun with one mag is more than I would want to pay, but I am a cheapskate.

1006 is a great gun. $600 is about as cheap as you are going to find a nice one. You really need to handload if you shoot a 10mm much. Otherwise, ammo is pretty expensive.

I just paid that for a 1076 (shorter version of 1006). I had a 1006 at one time but it was HEAVY!!! The 1076 is heavy too, but not as. $599 is a decent price to pay for any S&W 10mm, as they aint making em any more!

Pretty much any functioning Smith 10mm is worth 600. I don't think that you could hurt it if you tried. The 1006 is built like a tank. Let us know if you get it.

And yes, it is cheaper to reload for the 10mm, but it is great round and worth the effort.

The price seems fair enough even with out the box, for a great pistol made to handle the full potential of the 10mm cartridge. If it has the original box, papers & tools with a second magazine it's a great price. I'd buy it! You didn't mention if it has the fixed sights or adjustibale ones.

If you are not a semi auto guy, you will need some trigger time time master. The pistol is heavy and large but this adds to its handling more so than a carry pistol. I happen to love all my S&W10xx series pistols as they are each a little different in their function.

That is a good price. Mags are pricey though, along with the ammo.

Ahh, someone was at The Firing Line in Aurora...
I saw it the other day. Very nice. Fixed sights, 2 mags, and no box IIRC. It was very difficult to walk out of there without buying it.

$600 is a good price. The S&W 10mm's will only continue to go up in price as its coming around 20 years since they were made, and they didn't make nearly as many as all of the other 3rd gens. Be warned though, 10mm is an addictive round. If you buy it you will want more of them shortly after shooting it.

Well, I took this picture in my living room tonight...

It's got a few dings and was a little dirty, but cleaned-up very nice. The mags are in good shape too.

Now I have a S&W auto to keep my S&W revolvers company!

I think $600 was a good price. As for the expense of shooting it...last time I checked every range I've been to lately charges the same price for both 45acp and 10mm. Expensive...yes, but I don't hear anyone warning others against buying 45s because of ammo costs.

You got a good deal, I think that looks great! I lucked into an off-brand 10 mm (a Delta Elite) awhile back. If I came across a 1006 in that condition for that price, I would add it in a heartbeat!

That $600 price is about what I am seeing the 1006 go for with two mags, no box or papers when I run across them.

If you don't reload now is a great time to start as most of the LGS's I haunt seem to never have more than a box or two of any flavor 10mm.

Now you have to start looking for an 1026, 1066, 1076, 1086 and the HOLY GRAIL of S & W 10mm's, an 1046.

Luckily, the local Sportsman's Warehouse had several boxes of the Hornady 180 gr XTP JHP load @ $18/20 (same as .45 ACP), and many boxes of CCI Blazer 200 gr TMJ at $29/50 (worse than .45 ACP, but not THAT bad).

Seems to me that the Hornady 180 gr XTP load might be the "best" load from a traditional manufacturer on the market right now for multipurpose use (bad people, bad dogs, bad cats and bad black bears)- significantly hotter that .40 S&W, but not trying to become a .41 Magnum.

Can't wait to shoot it!!!!

Congrats on the 1006. I purchased mine 01/10 for $468, no box, no papers, one mag. It has adjustable sights, which I am not crazy about, but for that price I had to get it. The extra mags I have came from MidwayUSA. I think they were around $33 each. As for target ammo here in central PA, I pay about $30 a box for 50 rounds. There is a mom&pop place locally that still has the original black talons in 20 rnd boxes that I use for carry. That 200gr SXT bullet is nasty. I think the toughest part was finding a holster that suited me. I ended up, after a long search, with a DeSantis Thumb Break Scabbard. That's a great OWB holster. Tough to find, though, for the big 3rd Gens. Anyway, enjoy the 10mm and good luck.

As others have stated, the 10mm is addictive.

My 1006 was just the first of a couple more.

$600 is a good price. You'll aways be able to get that out of
it should you ever (I doubt it) decide to move it along.
