Is It Really Too Big?

I have 6.5" 500. Yeah it's big and yeah it's powerful. I don't usually load it up with 5. Just a few shots are fun. I practice often with it and I'll carry it in Alaska for whatever comes along. I also have a Ruger Redhawk .44 Magnum. Being an ambi I can shoot with both hands. What looks I get when I torch off both of them. I didn't buy the 500 to be cool or have the badest gun I got it for carrying in the woods. I don't want to ever say "I shoulda got a bigger gun" nuff said.

Well, I for one only see two real purposes for owning an X Frame Revolver.

1) Hunting or a backup for Hunting with a long gun

2) Bragging rights as a collector - just because they make it.

I see no role for the X Frame as a carry gun, self defense gun or general purpose plinking gun, but some guys may think differently than I. I would NEVER discharge a round that powerful inside a home!!!!!

To Hans G, & anyone seriously entertaining this thought of powering-up.

It's called a handgun. More often than not, we will only have the gun-hand available to respond to a threat. Can you wield the Beast one-handed, with recoil, and be back on target for follow-up?

Over-Penetration. I'm pretty sure we'll have to answer not-only for our misses, but also our 'go-throughs'.

Blast. Auditory exclusion or not, the human ear/s can only take so much.

Perception. TO a jury (NOT of YOUR Peers, by-the-way), and the public, even in a righteous shoot. It's one thing if you brought a 'hunting' back-up pistol to a fight in an outdoors environment. Quite another to explain brining one with on your evening errands.

The X-Frames are purpose guns. Their purpose is for hunting large and dangerous game and for protection from large and dangerous game, and for use as accurate range guns. They were never intended to be a SD/HD firearm for use against two legged predators. Just as a 2'' J-Frame is not intended to hunt large and dangerous game, even tho there are some that may argue it's worth there.

They are not for everybody, nor were they ever intended that way. Like big wheeled 4 wheel drive trucks....some folks have 'em cause they really need them to cover the terrain, while others just have them to decorate the driveway.

Being a hunter, I have seriously been thinking of laying a 500 away. I own a 44mag and the 500 would really be a sweet addition collection wise and in the woods.

For the owners.....just how much more recoil (I know it's suggestive) difference is there in the 44mag 8.3" and the 500 8.3"?

FWIW: I can shoot the 44mag one handed, either hand, zero issues.

Not a huge difference unless you are using very hot loads. The 44 mag I think is a sharper recoil.. a "BANG" if you would, and the 500 is more of a "BOOM"... if that makes any sense..

Just make up a few stories like Elmer about 500 yards shots with your J frame, and Elmer would have given you a pass :)

Lol, dunno about 500 yards but at 45-50 yards I took my bobcat this past year with my 500 magnum.

I go into the woods with either a heavy main rifle and smaller side arm or smaller rifle and a heavy sidearm. Shotgun I'll run with the 500 mag too. This means I can go for larger game as well as small depending on what the trip is purposed for. It always sucks running into a bear with your .22 in hand and nothing to back it up with :)

Me out with the winchester 22 mag and 500... its in the little holster on the side :D

Does it weigh a lot? Yup, get a galco setup or a custom holster set from El paso and you'll do just fine.

For the record, my EDC is a S&W airweight.

I've owned a S&W model 29, 8-3/8" and now this Beastie with the same 8-3/8" barrel I usually used a 240 grain round in my M-29 and the largest round I've used in the 500 is a 400 grain Winchester Platinum Tip.

The 500 has more kick but not nearly as much as you would think with less barrel rise than the M-29 due to the compensator! One handed?? Oh Yeah, No Problems there!! In fact it seems to be a touch more accurate as I don't take as much time aiming one handed...

Hunting? Yep. I'm gonna check with some of the local farmers and see if they need some coyote's taken care of. Maybe some deer hunting, etc....

Concealed Carry?? I have no need to at present....

Home/Personal Defense??? I'm presently using the 350 grain JHP Winchester Reduced Recoil round as that is what the gun seems to like as far as accuracy and recoil so I'm not too worried about shooting through all the walls in my house and my neighbors too!

That said, Home defense is REALLY gonna boil down to the situation and just what I can get in my hands and if it's that 500... Oh Well, guess I gotta call the new window installers and get a hearing aid!! :D

At least I'll be alive to do so!! ;)

Interesting but incorrect

HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!! That's my favorite rant of the week! Well done! Wrong, but well argued.....

We have discussion after discussion about concealed carry and hiding large guns, like the 50AE Desert Eagle. Nobody says it CANNOT be done - because it CAN.

But it's 90 degrees after dark all over half of America, and it's pretty doggone warm over most of the other half, too. Unless you're in a business environment that requires a coat and tie, or some other covering garment, you're walking around in....what? Jeans and a T-shirt? A sport shirt and shorts? A casual business shirt, slacks, and a lightweight vest, maybe? WHERE IN THE SAM HILL IS AN X-FRAME GOING TO GO AND BE HIDDEN? You'll have heck to pay hiding a 1911 or a 4" K frame in that short sleeved shirt and jeans - if you can do it at all.

Yes, anyone can conceal a huge handgun - but almost nobody has the "want to" because they want to be comfortable. Clint Smith says a handgun should be comforting, not comfortable, but an X-frame is neither - because by the time you draw that monster and get it on target and MAYBE get one hit with it, MAYBE, your opponent is either gonna cut your heart out or pump 9 rounds of 9mm into your hide.

The X-frame is a PURPOSE built gun - absolutely - and self defense (except in bear country) or home defense are NOT the purpose.

In a crazy world of I can do it better than you I'll be glad to stand next to anyone with an X-frame and at the buzzer we'll draw and fire at one target and see who hits it first and how many times. I'll use my EDC - a 642 - or one my other favorite choices, one of my 9mms, or a 2" Model 10. Heck, I'll even use my Ruger Vaquero - and I'll cover all bets.

Do you think Jerry made that 1,000 yard shot in one shot?

My brother (RIP) would take any gun and make one shot to see where it hits then make an adjustment to put them all in the black.

I figured it out at 100 yards with my cz 85db in 9mm luger it takes exactly 3' of Kentucky windage to make pin point shots at 100 yards.

My point is anyone of us can do it with practice.
Jerry is the best living revolver shooter in the world, and perhaps ever.

His ability is not just hype. He has world records and countless championships to his credit.

Your point is not on point.

I'm a good shooter but few are truly great.

Rant/off.

It sounds like....

It sounds like you've about got yourself talked into one. There ain't a thing wrong or 'bad' about an X frame IF you want one. I can't use it and I'd have to load for it because commercial ammo is about $1.50/pop.

PS I'm not big on compensators.

I don't think it's to big. I love mine! It makes grown men cry lol. I wouldn't sell it for anything. I'm still trying to find the right s&w 500. Wish they made one like mine.

where the heck do you find commercial ammo for $1.50 a pop? Most I see is double that! And yes, I definitely roll my own!

I can still reload them with 350gr XTP's for $0.68 a round though.

Well.... You DID ask......... :D:D

I did, I did:D.. I remembered seeing that C.O.P. ammo on gunbroker so I just went back to see how much it was there , a guy has it for $185 for 7 boxes of 20 which comes out to $1.32 each..Not too bad for what it is I guess.
