Is my Walmart being sneaky?

If a person was to sit down & calculate the difference between buying factory range ammo & reloading their own they would faint.

This! Not to mention Walmart is raising their prices by about a $1 a box or more. I just ordered my press and won't be buying any more factory ammo ever again..:)

Every time the Gov't has a big order that ammo is in short supply for us. On getting ammo I spend $40 a week. If they don't have what I need then I have that much more for next week.

What hourly rate for your time would bring the reload price to factory price? If you can make $50 per hour doing something else, would it still be worth reloading?

I'm in the very south side of San Antonio. Only two stores, Walmart and Academy carried ammo for the southside. Academy is high on their prices and limited selection though they have SD ammo. I realize that if I were to venture further into town I'll have better luck.

I've been checking out online vendors and they have some good deals so I'll be buying online though I'll check Walmart time to time. I just want to have a nice little stock for hard times. FMJs are not ideal for SD but it's better than nothing.

IMO some of the activities being described in this thread will help in causing a ammo problem. Buying everything in the case will only cause a shortage giving the manufacturers and stores a reason to raise prices costing us all more money. Remember, the prices still haven't come down from the 2008 stupidness and if we help it happen again no one will be able to afford ammo!!!

I have no problem with buying what you need and a little extra just in case but emptying the case will only make thing hard on everyone and cost us a lot of money in the long run...

AMEN to this post! I know a few people who still have hundreds of CASES, not boxes, from the last self-induced "shortage".
Your wife will just sell it for pennys-on-the-dollar at the yard sale when you die anyway!

How much money per hour do you make shooting?

If you make $50 an hour, then I don't think you would care what the cost was for ammo. If you are concerned about time spent, and make $50/hr. then buy a big Dillon press, like the Super 1050, and produce 1,200 rounds and hour. Wish I made $50/hr, but just happy I have a job.

How much do you get paid for any non-work activity? My hundred rounds of reloaded 45 ACP cost me under $10 and with my Dillon I can load 200 rounds an hour easy. At Walmart 45 ACP costs around $40 per 100 so in that "wasted" hour I earned $60.

We reloaders do tend to forget - if you don't enjoy the hobby, there ain't enough money in the world to make someone want to do it!

So crogiS&W I apologize for my earlier remark and should have said, "it isn't about the money, it's just a good excuse.":D

I clearly remember not being able to find allot of reloading components during the Great Ammo Shortage a couple years ago. Primers were almost none existent and massively overpriced and rationed when located. Most name brand bullets were nowhere to be found either.

While I have been reloading for over 25 years, if I find a good deal on factory ammo I buy it.

I walked into WalMart today and they were flush w/.22, .38, .380, .40, & .45 but very little 9mm and I snagged their last 7 boxes!

When buying ammo, try not to think in terms of "boxes." Joe

Our local WM is also open 24hrs but they are consistently low on ammo. I found out they get there deliveries on Tuesdays so that is the day I visit. I resorted to some Russian 9mm ammo (Tula) and was able to eat through most of it but I prefer Winchester and Federal. Also shot some Herters but that was from Cabela's and it came in the box I bought.

This morning I snagged a box of Win 40sw 180 JHP (Personal Defense.) I was hoping I'd get a box of 165 JHPs but no luck. At least it's better than nothing. At least I got a fair stock of FMJs and JHPs for 40sw (320 total.) I'm ok on 9mm but should get more JHPs. If I ever see a 100 pack of 9mm UMCs I'll be satisfied. :)

Ammo availability

With 90,000 primers, 50 pounds of powder, 600 pounds of lead, and 2 Dillon 550 presses sitting nearby; the cost of shooting isn't real interesting. Now what is this thing about a "job"? :D

There are also bullet molds, a sizer/luber, and a melting pot nearby, too. ;)

The TV program I watched about Walmart's system to track sales and supply stores would tend to lean toward if they have it and people are buying it the giant computer network will send it out. They stated that Strawberry Poptart sales went up 700% in the projected path of a hurricane- I bet they can figure out where ammo is being panic bought.

That's $2,080 a yr. You could have bought a top of the line Dillon & enough components for who knows how much more better quality ammo.

FWIW, most of the guys I know who say "I don't have time" are watching "Family Guy" reruns and chuggin' 40 ouncers at night or posting on the Internet how they don't have time to reload.

I don't think of reloading as a chore but a hobby. I like to reload and I find it very relaxing, especially in the Winter when it's too cold to do much of anything else. I produce the best and most accurate ammo that can be had and I do so at a highly reduced price from that of factory ammo.

Even if I didn't shoot I would probably still reload because I enjoy doing so...

This morning I snagged a box of 40sw 100 pack UMC 180 HPs for $33. I guess I have enough for now.

EDIT: Looks like I caught this before they raised the price because you'll have to see what the online vendors want for theirs. So far I saw $47 to $52 for the 100 value pack. 50 round boxes are $25 and up. Unreal.
