Is my Walmart being sneaky?

I don't reload (yet). It's not because I'm lazy or foolish but it takes time. So I see the cost of buying bulk ammo online the cost of the shooting sport. I work a lot of hours and when I have free time I don't want to spend them reloading I would rather spend it with family or at the range or looking for and buying Smith's. Now when I retire and have time on y hands I am sure I will look at it differently. BTW I have stopped buying at WM. I either buy on line or at some of our Large gun stores that stock plenty of ammo and have sales often. We have a LGS on the West side that beats WM prices everyday and they never seem to be short. It's a 45 minute drive though. I buy most of mine on line in 1000 round bricks for the best pricing and least hassle.

How much do you get paid for any non-work activity? My hundred rounds of reloaded 45 ACP cost me under $10 and with my Dillon I can load 200 rounds an hour easy. At Walmart 45 ACP costs around $40 per 100 so in that "wasted" hour I earned $60.

That's a helpful comparison. I'm retired so make "social security". I just pulled $50 out of the air for what I figured a self-employed person might earn. That person might have to choose between working [and earning] and reloading [and not earning]. If one enjoys being at the bench and reloading then that is surely the way to go. I like to shoot 50-100 rounds two or three times a month, but my enjoyable "bench time" is woodworking with hand tools [only], so I go to WalMart.

So crogiS&W I apologize for my earlier remark and should have said, "it isn't about the money, it's just a good excuse."

Apology accepted. I wasn't offended; I assumed I was not entirely clear in what I was trying to say. Woodworking is my hobby, so I spend more for ammo than if I took up the "reloading hobby".

My local WM usually is always stocked. I typically buy 3 boxes of 9mm and a box of .38 sp every week. If they have the 100 rnd boxes I get those. But I normally shoot 2-3 boxes a week of 9mm. My next ammo purchase will be a 1000 rnd case at the local gun shop. In that size case they are selling 9mm for $11 a box so ~ $220 for a case. WM sells locally for 50rnd boxes of 9mm for $12.50 a box. It will say me some $$ in the long run.

If a person was to sit down & calculate the difference between buying factory range ammo & reloading their own they would faint.

What hourly rate for your time would bring the reload price to factory price? If you can make $50 per hour doing something else, would it still be worth reloading?

This is time that many folks just don't have. Between work, yardwork, travel for work, family,yardwork, home, cleaning the leaves out of the pool, yardwork...there is barely enough time to shoot. And with range time I spend my "free time" either loading mags before or cleaning after.

Walmart is my last choice for purchasing ammo. Try Cheaper Than Dirt. Prices are much better than just about anywhere and shipping is fast. Once you are set up to reload, it is definately cheaper than any ammo you can buy.

Gotta respect that.

An alternative may be to get together with your range friends and go in on a bulk order. If you can all agree on a caliber!

I have 3 walmarts in my city and they only have a problem keeping up with the ammo i want to by just once a week and only one box, that is the UMC 250 round box 9mm....and they NEVER have it. but they have all the other 50 round boxes and the wincherster white box of 100 rounds

Dillon is your friend, if you want it to be. I got into reloading to be able to supply myself with ammunition when I could not find it on the open market. The bonus was I reload 5 different calibers of handgun ammunition for about 40% of commercial prices.

My equipment paid for itself with in 3000 rounds. I probably don't spend 20 hours a year to produce the 5,000 rounds of centerfire I fire on average a year.

Does this make us hoarders. I mould bullets and reload .38 spl and .45 ACP on 2 Dillon Square Deal Presses. I figure my reloads cost abut $.03 to $.035 per round. I don't look at reloading as work, just part of the hobby.
