Is Remmington Ammo that bad?

I was going to comment that I have never had a problem with any Remington ammo. But after reading all of the comments it could be because I haven't bought any recently. I still have 900 rounds of 22LR HV and HV hollow points i purchased in 1981. All of my newer 22LR rounds are Fed and CCI. As hard as 22LR's are to find today I would buy Remingtons if they were less than 5 cents per round.

Let us know how your revolver handles it. That is a whole different ballgame compared to the semi autos and being "jam" fed into the chamber or a bolt action style rifle. At least with your revolver,you could just rotate the cartridge and give it another try. Be carefull about hangfires though. I didn't have a high amount,but they did happen (could have been some loose bullets and moisture ?). A revolver hammer strike would be different than a semi auto pistol too.

Also let us know how they group and at what range too.

I've had real good luck with the Federal 550 bulk in my 15-22 and M&P-22. Seems you want/need to stay in the 1260+ fps,copper plated and 38 (36?)+gr bullets. Great for plinking. Trouble is,they are hard to find now too.

Funny, it's the most expensive 22 mag according to the list prices. And it's the ONLY 22 mag they have in stock. All the other is sold out including CCI Maximag.

So that just seems weird too. Why would the most expensive 22 mag have a less than stellar reputation? I don't get it.

With the way ammo is selling and barely hitting the shelf. If it's still on the shelf,it's either junk or an off breed no one or very few shoot.

I have some old ammo cans I found digging around looking for some old reloading manuals all stiffed with 22LR bricks that had been sitting since the mid 70's that are all still good. Found a price tag that said $4.98 and that's per brick. It'd be nice to have a time machine.

FWIW, my testing of .22 mag ammo in Marlin and Ruger rifles as well as in Ruger Single Six and S&W 48, showed that generally speaking , the heavier bullets in CCI and Winchester offering performed most consistently. My ruger single six also liked .22Wrf loads despite their lower power.

I won't touch their .22 LR!

Other stuff is fine, but for my needs (competition) there is much better ammo available from other makers with softer primers, medium power, round bullets.
 
The plot thickens. I just looked up the Remington Premium 22 magnum reviews at Bass Pro. And lo and behold......people are raving about it!

I'm beginning to think maybe the reason Wal Mart still has several in stock is the price. At $17 for 50 rounds, that is quite a bit more than the sold out CCIs, Winchester, etc.

Then, I read reviews at "Luckygunner.com" for the same exact Remington I got today. 33 grain accu-tip. Again, reviews rave about this stuff. They are out of it too as is Bass Pro. Yet this Wal Mart in Frisco Texas has several boxes. I think it's the price......it's pricey.

Well, I may go back up there tomorrow and get me some more. So now I'm really confused! thanks all....

Well, based on past experience with Remington .22 WMR rounds, I would haffta say I would not purchase them again. The bad experience was 6 years ago and I have since gotten rid of the firearms that take .22 WMR rounds. So, I have no current experience with them. Back then, it was misfires/FTF's and projectiles not seated straight or canted.

Now, I would say I did like the Remington Yellow-Jackets that I shot in my 10/22 and my wife's Taurus 94. But, they were not .22 WMR rounds. I guess it sounds like a roll of the dice....I would find a tried & true round and stick to that.
 
My original question earlier was about the better bullet:

1) Remington 'Golden Bullet' 525s vs.
2) Federal 'Champion' 525s, both 22LRs in bulk.

Should have asked what is the best 'break-in' round, and the best 'long-term' round for my new M&P 15-22.

The 'magnums' got me confused - both Remington's RMR (Remington Magnum Rimfire) and Winchester's WMR (Winchester Magnum Rimfire).

I will try those above and others like REM Viper, FED Am Eagle, and the CCIs Stinger and Blazer. (BTW, the casing on the CCI is longer and the OA length a bit more than the others, if that matters).

Field trials will tell the story - for my gun anyway.

P.S. I read where the bullet diameter on .22 magnum is .224, whereas the bullet diameter of .22LR is .223. If that is right, seems that should become 'common knowledge' to prevent cross-ups with magnum caliber rifles.

Dallas, the only way to unconfuse yourself is to buy some and try it in your specific firearm for your specific application. All of these posts are not going to get you any closer to finding the answer. That will only come with YOUR experience. Good luck!
 
The Remington 22 Mag is not the greatest. Ran it through my Marlin 25MN and I could not get good groups with it at 50 yards. Also had quite a few misfires. I stay away from Remington rimfire. The handgun ammo seems to be loaded a little on the hot side. The rifle ammo seems to be good but not that accurate out of my .308 Savage.

I agree Mod. I'm going to do just that. Lots of great input here and I appreciate all the responses. I will say I was quite to surprised to hear people utterly rave about how GREAT the remington 22 magum Premier is at cheaperthandirt, bass pro, and Luckygunner and a few other sites. As you say, I just need to try it for myself. Thanks........
 
On a sidenote, I went to Academy last night in Plano Texas just to see if they might have some .22 magmum ammo. Hell no.

But the guy at the door did tell me that the new ammo is usually put out early Monday, Wednesdays, and Fridays. And he said there's usually a line at the door to get in for the ammo and that now...since they put a limit on the number of boxes you can buy......guys are bringing their wives, sisters, brothers, neighbors, their accountants, strangers, hookers, anyone they can bring or pay to come along and buy a box for them....
 
FWIW, I just looked at a box of Remington 22 WMR I bought last month and it says Made in USA. Boxes of Rem 22LR Thunberbolt and Subsonic I bought 5-10 years ago also say Made in USA. So if they once outsourced their rimfire stuff it doesn't look like they still do so (or I just got lucky and have USA stuff.)

That said, Rem has not been the most accurate brand in either my LR or WMR rifles. But a coworker says the cheap stuff in the 525 boxes is absolutely the most accurate ammo in his Marlin 60. Every rimfire barrel is different.
 
I am happy to report that today I walked into WalMart in "The Colony" Texas (North Dallas) and they had both Winchester 380 and Winchester 22 mag! I snagged a box of each, (I could have taken another box but I'm not greedy I guess). They had clearly got a new shipment in, there were 5 guys waiting, they had 223 , 45, etc.

They did not have any 22 LR and one guy said he can't find that anywhere. I couldn't find 380 anywhere either so the timing was good. It's going fast if you are in the area......good luck. I guess we are all "hunting ammo" now.

Seems like most of this anti-Remington ammo stuff is all about .22LR.

I don't care for some of Remington's centerfire target ammo because their lead bullets can cause more fouling in the barrel, but I've never heard about any problems with their higher quality defensive or hunting ammo, and would gladly buy it if available. Remember, it's still made in the USA.
 
You guys buying from Wally World....make sure you use cash. Any CC or debit purchases of ammo flag for corporate whistle blower by Patriot Act. It's for real ...check it out if you're calling BS
 
Remington centerfire ammo is fine in my experience but rimfire has not been good. S&W even says not to use it in the M&P 15-22. I have used it in the past with mixed results. Accuracy was ok but very unreliable ignition. If there was nothing else availible I would buy it but never if I had any other brand to buy.
 
I have used Remington ammo - both rifle and handgun - for decades.

IMO, it has improved a lot over the last 10 years. I use it for carry and for hunting ammo, and have never had any trouble with any of it...except for the hot loaded .22LR - Thunderbolt...
I prefer the Federal .22 ammo designed especially for auto pistols and I did use Winchester .22 magnum when I still had a rifle to shoot it out of.

I've had good luck with most Remington ammo, including the 525 bulk packs of "golden bullets." Their blue label std. velocity target ammo is really good stuff. Like many people, I prefer CCI if it's available. I've also had pretty good luck with Aguila ammo. Winchester rimfire ammo, on the other hand, is pure junk. I fired a box of it today at the range through a model 34-1, and a model 17-4. I had at least 10 failures to fire on the first strike, and one squib load that barely made it out of the 2" barrel on the model 34! All this in one box of 100 rounds!
 
I have no complaint about Remington center fire ammo but their bulk pack 22LR does have more duds per pack then say Federal or CCI.
 
When I commented that Remington centerfire ammo was tame velocity wise, I didn't impugn it's reliability or quality, just velocity.

Contrary to many comments here, I have had good luck with Remington Golden Bullet bulk packs. My relatively new Remington Model 597, semi auto .22LR rifle runs just fine on Remington Golden Bullet bulk packs and for that matter, everything I've fed it. Highly recommend it if anyone is in the market for a modestly priced, reliable and fun gun. Accurate as well. Don
 
No, its not that bad.......its worse

The .22 **** comes with 10% misfires and 40% pops. The centerfire pistol rounds split after 1 firing.

Not just once. When it happens 3 or 4 times over a 3 year period, its time to switch.

Personally I've reloaded tens of thousands of rounds over 41 years and had only 1 that didn't work right (my fault).

Remington for free is still too much.
