Is THAT the active shooter?

Folks, if you find yourself at the scene of some active shooter incident, and you're lawfully armed, whether as a private citizen or an off-duty peace officer ... and you're NOT in a readily identifiable uniform, and preferably clearly illuminated by bright light ... you're THE MAN WITH A GUN to the uniform boys & girls, and probably to anyone else lawfully armed at the chaotic scene. Certainly you will be to the ACTIVE SHOOTER(S).

That likely being the case ... act accordingly.

What's "accordingly"?

Well, it's going to depend on the particular scene, the totality of the circumstances involved and how the event unfolds moment-by-moment.

If you're a peace officer and have the training and authority to act and intervene, better hope you make all the right moves for all the right reasons ... and you're still not killed by becoming a victim of one of the worst oxymorons of all time, meaning friendly fire.

If you're an out-of-state peace officer visiting for personal reasons, or you're a retired peace officer, and have no authority to invoke at that time? Still better make all the right choices for the right reasons and hope the actions of anyone else don't get you killed, anyway.

If you're a private citizen, lawfully armed, whether or not you've acquired some "training" on your own time, better make the right decisions for the right reasons, and hope nobody else mistakes you for THE ACTIVE SHOOTER.

What would I do? Depends. Really. I'd fall back on my own training and professional experience and hope like hell I could make all the right decisions for all the right reasons, and not be killed by either the ACTIVE SHOOTER, or by anyone else lawfully armed at the scene.

Gear questions? Guns and ammo & whatnot? Hey, it'll be whatever I have on me, regardless of the reasons I chose my gear that day/night. I'm no longer going out looking to be thrust, or to thrust myself, into Harm's Way anymore, so I'm less inclined to gird up and trundle around with much of the same gear I carried on-duty.

It'll be what it'll be.

Like the man said, Choose Wisely, not Poorly.

Thank you; sound advice!

When I said this it stirred up a lot of anger.

My similar advice was 'maybe don't commit to a decision beforehand- plan to play the cards you're dealt'.

Use too many words and the short attention span folks will skim it and infer a meaning not there. Use too few words and the message might not be crystal clear enough for the people with comprehension issues.

Though it typical in forums, it somehow always surprises me. ;)

It shouldnt surprise. Most people hear or comprehend what they want to. Forums or live discussion.

This is the key. Be smart, be sure, but above all, be wise.

Alaways baffled!

Considering all the 'good guy with a gun saves the day' references we see here regularly, seems some of you want/expect somebody else to be that good guy.

That said, I am not the kind of guy who will do nothing whilst my fellow citizen(s) is in peril. Moreover, I will NOT check to see if a victim is related to one of you who is not willing to render aid to someone other than kin. All in need will get the best I can offer. :)

Was involved in some very serious off duty situations in my crime fighting days and successfully navigated those experiences thus not much reason to think that will not continue. I will accept FULL responsibility for my actions, too. Note: Most were not in primary jurisdiction; some not in jurisdiction at all.

Be safe.

I don't understand why you're confused. No one here has said that they expect someone else to be their savior. What I and many others have said is to be sure of the situation before you pull out your gun and run around.

Did you read all the posts?

Apparently you did not read all the posts herein. Yes, no one affirmatively stated they were, in fact, looking for someone else to be the savior, it is inferred by all the ‘good guy with a gun’ posts certain folks here are relying on it.

To the point, is everyone ALWAYS in the company of their loved ones when said loved ones/family are out and about? Who is going to help them if they are not?

Be safe.

Thank you for that link okiegtrider. His thoughts mirror my own on this subject.

I did read all the posts and no, I don't agree that anyone here is expecting you to protect our family or ourselves or random other people.

If you haven't read it, read the article linked above. It puts in perspective just how dangerous it is to jump into the middle of a situation that doesn't directly involve you. Just to put a fine point on it, here are a couple of quotes directly from that article:
I spent 20 years going in harms way for total strangers. Would I do that today? Probably not. I no longer have the deep pockets of the City of Detroit behind me. Sound callous? Well, would you be willing to jeopardize everything you own and your family’s security for a total stranger? Would you be willing to lose your home, your cars, and your retirement to play Knight of the Round Table?
This is the point I've been trying to make all along here. Yes, we all want to help as much as we can, but personally, I'm not willing to put my family's future at risk to save someone I have no connection to. Worse would be to save that person and then have them sue me for some ridiculous reason just like in the article. It may sound callous. It may make some people sick, but I have a mandate from on high to take care of my family and I must take care of myself first to be able to fulfill that mandate.

To the point, is everyone ALWAYS in the company of their loved ones when said loved ones/family are out and about? Who is going to help them if they are not?
The world is a dangerous place my friend. We cannot cover all possible situations or dangers that present from day to day. That said, I absolve you from any responsibility to protect my family if I'm not there. I don't expect you to put yourself in harms way to protect my family. It's just not a reasonable request from anyone.

I'm trying as hard as I can to be safe. I train hard to be prepared to protect myself and family. I've trained my family and taken them to training. IF, I see a situation develop from the beginning, IF I think I can safely help and stop the bad guy without endangering others, I will do my best to help the innocent. But, I'm not running into a situation I don't know anything about.

I carry a gun because i do not expect a good guy with a gun to save me. This includes active or off duty leo. I certainly do not want to be shot accidentally as oft happens when those armed good guys start shooting.

Marshall said eloquently wht I tried, ineptly, to communicate: "Apparently some people are certainly willing to fantasize about intervening in a hypothetical situation. Some may consider this harmless musing, but I find it troubling. Tactical planning involves assessing all the potential problems carefully and realistically looking at the cost of such intervention. Role-playing or gaming looks at it through rose colored glasses and ignores the cold hard reality of a person’s involvement in a deadly force event."

I've read over this entire thread....

And I'm going to agree with the Big D all the way to the last ditch on this'n.

To add, there's a whole bunch of y'all posting here that I am sure will do the correct thing for themselves....

Those that can lead will lead, those that can follow will follow, and the rest will jest get the hell outta the way!

Why

We have a situation at our church. 8-9 of us carry every Sunday. Our church recently hired a deputy from the Sheriff's Dept. to be there every Sunday. I ask the Pastor Sunday if he had informed the deputy that there were armed members in the church. He said no. In a BAD situation this could cause one of our carrying members to be shot the LEO. Not good.

I would make a point every service to introduce myself and let them know I'm armed. That's what I do.

It might be a good idea for the nine of you to visit the Sheriffs dept. and introduce yourselves to EVERY deputy that works there, and make them aware of the situation at your church.
