Is the .32 Better Than the .44 Mag?!? — GMP #247

The fact that way too many LEOs are not trained to that standard and don’t acknowledge the need, is why the hit percentage in officer involved shoots is down around 20%, with the other 80% skipping through the neighborhood looking for innocent bystanders and lawsuits.

LEO 2024 is a big difference from LEO 1964.

All the schools that I have been to teach certain ways of doing (mastering) your shooting technique. They do this by "rote" training. Doing the same thing the same way each and every time. It is imprinted into your brain. When faced with a shooting situation people will fall back to their rote training. I know that every time I have needed a gun, by the time I realized it the gun was already drawn.

Mindset for on the street is more important then shooting perfect scores using the perfect shooting techniques.

With a Gunfighter Mindset you will engage a threat instead of the "Fight or Flight" response.

Ya think? I was in an Anti-Terrorist Unit in the Corps. What do you think our mindsets were?

... I’d rather face two gang bangers with AK 47’s than Jerry Miculek with a J frame snub

But you know some teenage gang bangers who are Psychopaths? They have killed before and will kill again. I knew a teenager who had four separate kills before he was put down. He wasn't a gun expert and all he knew was point and shoot.

Now as far as I know; Jerry has never fired a shot in anger. Will he fatally put down a cute blue eye blonde girl that flags him down and then pulls a weapon on him?

I have concerns if I have to engage someone that I not only have a responsibility to my family and myself but have a responsibility to everyone around me. If I pick a 357 or 44 mag for example and I have to shoot an assailant, what happens if the bullet over penetrates and injures or kills an innocent person. Say it goes through the target and a wall and kills another person in another room or building. What are the chances of hitting someone else due to over penetration? How fast can you recover for your second shot if needed if shooting a heavy magnum? Are you going to cause ear damage for everyone in the room? Ear damage is a small price to pay for saving a life but it’s a factor.

My choices for carry, 38 Special and 380. I have carried 9mm but really favor 38 or 380. I’ll even on occasion carry a 22 and have a 32 Colt Cobra that I wouldn’t hesitate to carry.

Yes but you think 100% of your Unit was good to go? Statistics say 25% of military people can not put down another human regardless.

In the military that falls under the "Rule of Five" for forecasting probabilities of combat does it not?

Would like to think that they would fall back on their training in a situation. It was pounded in their heads to not let their fellow Marines down. You never know what an individual will do until it happens. Fight or flight? Depends on which is stronger in that individual.

So what do you think the mindset is of SWAT?

I dealt with a small southern Ca. PD and with LA County Sheriffs Department SEB. That was many years ago. Do I think those folks would drop a hammer if needed.......Yes! They were all handpicked and if were not up to speed would have been gone off the team.

What’s the story on those multicolor stocks?

I found them on Amazon last year. I'm not sure how much I like the color, but even with my larger hands, they feel great. Even for being a boot grip. Similar to the VZ, but I think they're a little more aggressive.

Looks like they're still available. Depending on your frame, they may need a little fitting (filing around the trigger guard or frame screw).

Y'all remind me of the Code of the Bayonet Fighter that was taught in Army Basic Training when I attended that activity. I'm not sure what the DEI driven Army teaches today but for us it was very simple:

What is the code of the bayonet fighter?!?!?!

KILL, Drill Sergeant!!!!

That's hard to forget and easy to retain as you age and see the world grow more and more dangerous. But despite the location of various fighting knives that I keep at home I'm bringing a gun to the fight if the goblins come through the door. Any caliber, actually, but .38s and 9mms lurk everywhere in my abode. YMMV
