Is the volsquarten extractor a good or needed upgrade

Is the volsquarten extractor a good upgrade for the MP--15-22
My rifle will,be here soon and I have some extra money to spend. So I am looking at a few upgrades

Neither is 'needed' IMO but a trigger upgrade would be higher on my list of priorities

IMO if it's not broke don't fix it. Even it does break that is what the warranty is there for. Some people just like to modify their guns or if they are having issues choose to fix it themselves.

My two 15-22s are still (3+ yrs) just fine with their original extractors.

I'd say trigger group and/or optics would be the place to start but I go for performance over cosmetics...

In my case even when using ammo such as the CCI Mini Mag and AR Tactical I was getting too many FTE's. The gun would simply not have been usable in a competitive shooting scenario like a Steel Challenge match.

Installing the VQ extractor and tweaking the ejector fixed my FTE problem. It's a cheap fix if you need it.

As others have mentioned, a trigger upgrade is a very nice add for this gun. Not necessary but nice to have. I put the Hypertouch 24C on mine and really like it.

A new extractor probably isn't needed on a new rifle. Wait till you need it. If you just want to upgrade the gun, then spend the money for optics. I put a cheap twenty dollar reflex sight on mine, since it's only for plinking. What a difference that makes in the fun factor. Wow, that really makes target acquisition fast, accurate, and effortless. But then my eyes aren't what they used to be, so I needed something extra. But there's other upgrades available. Take a look at the last few pages of the 15-22 pictures thread, some of those guns are awesome. Yes, this rifle is good to go, right out of the box. But some of those upgrades available, really look cool! And after all, for most of us, it is, just a range toy. But extra magazines are always a good purchase also.

I didn't need to replace mine, but for the cost it's a cheap piece to replace. I changed out my safety for an ambi selector and was glad that I did. Come to find out that the detent pin in the selector (that holds the safety in position) is just plastic and was wearing out. I couldn't tell at the time so it was good timing. The way I look at it is Volquartsen makes good stuff and I think it's a good proactive swap out. Maybe the OEM would last forever, who knows?

I just put one in . For $10 bucks I figured what the heck. I have experienced a number of FTE so I'll see if it helps. Actually I feel the problem is more with the feeding from the magazine. If the rounds are not staggered just right they don't feed properly.

I bought my 15-22 in January of this year. For the first couple of months I had various and recurring issues with FTEs and FTFs. In April I put in the VQ extractor, tweaked the ejector as described in various other threads on this forum, and, after cleaning, only using a dry teflon lube on the receiver and bolt assemblies. I also have used [exclusively] CCI Minimags and Blazer ammunition [both are HV]. In an average of 100 rounds per week since then, I have no issues whatsoever with this rifle. It wasn't the most scientific process in determining the problem, but the result speaks for itself.

It's definitely "good". If you're having failures, then yes, it's needed. If not then it's not.

I know that your question was not directed to me, but I now have somewhere between 1200-1300 rounds through my M&P 15-22 since the Volquartsen extractor and have yet to have a failure of any type.

Actually I purchased 2 items. The Volq. Ext. and a McFadden Mag. loader. The loader is so fast and loads the mags perfectly. Probably put 200 rounds thru it with no issues. Prior to the extractor I had FTF and FTE even if the mags were carefully loaded with every magazine. With a $50 investment for both items I feel its $$ well spent.

No it's not needed (unless you're having extraction issues) but it's a quality piece of kit at a reasonable price. I put one in mine even though I wasn't having any issues.

My OEM extractor was suprisingly worn from relatively few (couple thousand).
