My buddy gave me wine for my birthday and now I have to give him something for his. He drinks bourbon - is there a nice one for 50 bones, give or take?

I rarely drink hard liquor, and don't know a thing about whiskey, but this thread reminds me of a favorite family anecdote...

My father loved Scotch. About 30 years ago, my younger brother -- the original smart aleck -- telephones me...

Brother: Dad's birthday is coming up. I asked him what he wants, and he told me he'd like a bottle of Johnny Walker Blue Label.

Me: What's that? (I'd heard of Red Label and Black Label, but not Blue Label.)

Brother: It's their premium Scotch, runs about $150 a bottle.

Me: Wow...you gonna buy it for him?

Brother: You think I'm crazy? I'm going to give him a bottle of Red Label and a blue Sharpie and tell him to make his own Blue Label!

And that's just what he did! (Dad loved it!) :)

Wild Turkey Rare Breed is an easy to find & really good bourbon. If you want one of the more highly sought after bourbons like Eagle Rare or Blantons you'll have to be either very lucky to find it or put much more effort into finding one. Jack Daniels Single Barrel Barrel proof, although not technically a bourbon but Tennessee Whiskey, is very good too, it packs a wallop of flavor (and alcohol), and that one is easy to find.

Eagle Rare is good. Basel Haydens is great. Larceny is also quite good.

I’ve also recently discovered a maker called J. Reiger. They are in Kansas City. Outstanding stuff. Also have a first rate gin.

Woodford Reserve Double Oak is my bourbon recommendation for "about" 50 bucks... that should be on the shelf... there are also the specialty bourbons from Maker's Mark cask strength was my bourbon last evening... do you know if he is a high end bourbon fan? or just a drinker?
if just a drinker, Wild Turkey 101, a bottle each of bourbon & rye for about 50 bucks combined is nice... like wine, bourbon has so many expressions it can be overwhelming... but fun

Great suggestion - I forgot about Woodford Double Oaked. I also recommend that one to people wanting to spend 50-60-ish. It's a wonderful bourbon. And like robvious alluded to, if your friend isn't serious about bourbons and mixes it with a lot of water, adds ice to it, etc, I would not get him the more premium bourbons, instead I'd follow robvious' suggestions re: Wild Turkey 101, etc.

This!

There is a reason Henry McKenna Bottle in Bond won the 2019 Worlds Best Whiskey competition. Here in Utah it now runs $59.99 a bottle. It is worth every penny and I always have few bottles in the liquor cabinet.
