Is this a real S&W 1911?

Looks like the slide has been polished, but it otherwise looks like a S&W 1911 to me. Those were made in the early part of the 2000's as I recall.

Definitely looks like someone had it polished. It looks to be in really good shape. Do you think it's worth $500?
No question it's worth $500 so long as it's in good mechanical shape.

NO that is not a real 1911 piece of military junk! Just look at the external extractor used by S&W. That is a 1911 clone like the rest of the 1911 junk that is out there from Turkey, Brazil or the Philippines or GOD only knows where else they make that piece of junk design today. S&W was sought out to replace the 1911 as far back as the 1940's Here take a look:

Yes the 1911 was the worst piece of junk ever designed and made. Browning's crowning achievements were the 1908 .32 caliber auto colt pistol and the .380 auto colt pistol in my opinion. The 1911 was a request from the military for a horse killing handgun to use in the trenches of Serbia during WWI. In 1911 there were still riding horses. The design is an abortion made from the two aforementioned auto loading pistol designs. pistols.
I'm not sure about the level of polish to the slide. It is a bit over the top for me, but then I lived with my 1943 production GI issue for many years.
You might want to call SW CS and ask about any history they may have on it as to repairs or date of production.
If it is your first 1911 but it is tricked out, I'm not so sure it would be a good "first", even if it is a good price.

I hope that is sarcasm or complete and utterly the worst post probably ever written. The 1911 and Hi Power are the two best firearms John Browning ever made along with the Auto 5 but that is a shotgun. I think my brain hurts from having to read your post.

Agreed.It was such a piece of junk that how many companies now have one in their catalog ? Colt,S&W,Sig Sauer,Ruger,Remington,Springfield just to name a few. It is no fluke that over the last 100+ years the gun has only grown in popularity, and is still used in military service today.

Very nice looking pistol. I'm not sure if it's been polished or the photos are lit well. One side looks polished, the other side looks normal. In any event, the only drawback to those for me, a lefty, is the lack of an ambidextrous safety . . .
The slide markings on those S&W 1911s were very lightly printed (laser?).
I had mine hard chromed and, naturally, the billboard slide came out clean.

It's a little older one and looks fairly stock. Doesn't look like anyone changed out grip safety, thumb safety, hammer, trigger, mag release or sights. So might be a positive indicator that the internals haven't been jacked with.
Just my opinion though, that one is used and looks it. It is a buyers market on new and used guns right now, especially new.
I just priced checked on the web for stainless full size 1911's with equivalent features as the one pictured (not stripped down or GI type models).
Rock Island - $550 to $600
Ruger, Remington, Kimber, Smith and Wesson, Springfield Armory can be found $700 to $800 price range.
Colt, step up Springfield and Kimber, Sig Sauer $800 to $900 or so.
So, if the new equivalent Smith or similar can be had for 700 to 750 I wouldn't give $500 for one that worn in today's market; however, if you could wiggle it down some or trade in your favor that gun although finish challenged would likely be a solid shooter.

So then the short answer would be.. yes.. it's a legit S & W..

I see a lot of Colt 45 auto's at gun shows. This one looks OK, but the proof is if it shoots and functions properly.
Stovepipes, failure to eject, failure to feed a full magazine,,and other faults are common in some of them.
If you can fire it before handing over the money, or get some sort of a buyer's guarantee, then buy it.
Tons of parts are always available at gun shows.
I have had problems with certain manufacturers though.

So five years before WWI began, and 7 years before the US entered WWI, the US Military specifically requested a pistol to be used in that conflict?
Can they please give me next weeks lottery numbers now?
We get it. You do not like 1911's. I'm not that big a fan of Glocks myself.

Back then the Army issue was a 38 caliber revolver.
The Natives high on chants and bravado, attacked our Army and killed a lot of our soldiers using this weak pistol caliber.
So,, a new powerful semi-auto pistol was designed and approved and issued to General Pershing's forces.
This time, the killing effect of this new Army sidearm was proven to be 100% effective.
Back then the Army issue was a 38 caliber revolver.
