I currently own a couple Smiths and recently picked up a Colt Python. I've been thinking about selling my 625-2 model of 1988 and 686 no dash or M stamp, to help fund a bright stainless python. I already have a 686-4 that's a 7 shot and enjoy it. The 686 I've personnally never fired it and the 625-2, I've fired once. What do you guys think? I will fire the python sparingly.

I'm not a collector, I think Pythons are great, but not $1,500+ worth of great. If a Colt breaks, your up-a-creek - it's junk. Those other two you mention will last as long as parts are available which, right now, appears to be a time period that certainly exceeds my lifetime.

With that, no, I would not do what you propose.

colt repairs pythons and there are several other shops in the country that do also. don't let that be an excuse. i do think they have gotten rediculous in price and are on a "bubble", that being said, they don't make anymore and doubt colt ever will again. cetainly not in the present form.

Pythons are tuned to the edge and in my experience, shooting them will put them over the edge rather quickly. I don't like the trigger "stacking" in the DA pull and cylinder lock-up is very close on the timing. But they sure are pretty guns... but not worth the pricy demand I am seeing at the gun shows and on the auctions - IMO.

Never could afford a python.5-6 years ago I decided they would just get more expensive,so I bought a 98-99% gun..A few weeks later a nib nickle appeared with an asking price of $900.I passed...Glad I bought the blue one when I did.

I've sold multiple guns in the past to fund ONE gun purchases. I justify it to myself because what I am getting is always more sought after/rare/collectible than what I am selling....I ALWAYS find the gun I want first, acquire it, then sell off what I need to recoup my money....NEVER sell guns in hopes of finding what you want.....it rarely works out to your advantage..

What is the asking price of the Python ? I just got 2 of them last week and am wondering if I did OK. A 4" bright stainless (1995) and a 2.5" blue (1970).

I would use gunbroker and check the completed auctions over the last 60 days. If you need to part with the stainless python let me know. :D

This would make the most sense, I really didn't think about selling them after. Now I just need to do some research and see what the values of these two are and if it's worth it.

Thanks

I always like to say it's your money and your guns so you should do whatever makes you the happiest. That said my tastes in guns has changed over the years and and many times I find myself selling the gun that was to die for only a few years before and then buying back something I sold along the way. I getting ready to do that again as I sold my mint Browning HP 4 years ago and now I want another one.

As a general inquiry, why NOT a 2-for-1 deal? You get rid of two items you've lost interest in, and acquire something you will truly enjoy. Sounds good to me.

As a personal opinion, I would NEVER trade off two quality S&Ws for one Colt snake gun unless I desperately wanted a safe queen. The S&Ws are superbly functional tools that will last a lifetime of hard use. I would not be afraid of shooting the Colt, but not nearly as much as the S&Ws. The Colt is a beautiful revolver, but it isn't to my tastes as a 2-for-1 trade. I would get much more practical use from my S&Ws.

A few years ago, I sold my two muscle cars for a down payment on a home. Seemed like a crazy idea when I first thought to do it, but it worked out perfectly. Tastes change ... I have more use for a quaint 200 year old home in the small town, than I did for a pair of torque monsters in the driveway.

Sounds to me like you have two guns you don't have any use for and are looking to add different one you have no use for. I'd sell the two and use that money on something I'd enjoy or need.

Ooooh! Has this guy been talking to your wife? :D

I guess I have to agree with him, as far as that goes, but you asked for an opinion about selling the two guns you have to buy another Python, to which I say, "Maybe next week, sometime, no, not now." :)

Even if the current market might not say so, your two S&Ws are worth more to me than one stainless Python.

If you want the one and don't want the two do it, why keep stuff you don't want.
I am, however, of the opinion that the Python is slightly overrated and VASTLY overpriced.

They said it better than I could.

If i was to purchase a "Blued Python", which has been
on my bucket list for me since the late 1970's.
It would probably be mostly a safe queen. I like the
"looks" of the Python and have wanted one because
they remind me of a time growing up, and seeing them
on TV and at the movies. Just a cool looking revolver.
Personally i would'nt trade 2 of my S&W's to acquire 1
safe queen i would'nt do much with except to occasionally
pull it out and wipe it down or show it off to friends.
I'd still love to have one but at todays prices don't see it
happening any time soon.
If i can get a "cherry" 4" model 28-2 and a 27-2 for the same
money as 1 Python, i'll be picking up the S&W's everytime.
But you need to do whatever "YOU" want and don't look
back. Have fun with them whichever way you go.

Chuck

Only you can make that decision. They are all great guns. I'd be interested in your 625 if you do decide to go thru w/ it.

" I've owned three Pythons. They were fine revolvers. In truth, I never cared for the way the grip is shaped nor did I ever like the DA trigger pulls on the Pythons. The SA was always fine. I did fine them to be muzzle heavy. As near as I can count, I've owned between 40-50 S&W revolvers. They've all been excellent revolvers. I currently own a nice 625-2 and recently traded off a nice 686-2. Depending on the Python, I might trade both those revolvers for the Python. But the Python would have to be very nice.
