is this Model a pre ten? cannot figure this one?

When you blow up the pictures the seam
Where the side plate fits shows clear indications of a refinish

It looks like all the questions have been answered by the very knowledgable people that hang around this site. I am always amazed how much I can learn from you guys. I like that little snubnose, and if I had it I think I would get the hammer and trigger re case colored. Then shoot the snot out of it, cause I love snubbies.

I was thinking the same thing, How do you get it back to case color? I found some spots on back of hammer where the blue didn't stick, do I take it apart and buff it off or how is it done?

There are some chemical processes for case color, but the true way is in a charcoal pit with wood ash, bone chips, I would probably send it out. The process was to case harden steel, the beautiful color is a by product of the process.

Before I had the hammer and trigger refinished I would look for replacements on EBay, Gunbroker, etc. It would be a lot cheaper in the long run. I don't think I've ever seen a refinished case hardened part look as good or original as factory. Many times these parts will drop in, but sometimes need fitting.

If it were mine, I would just leave the hammer and trigger alone rather than spending good money to replace or restore those on it. It seems somewhat pointless for what is clearly a shooter-grade revolver. I might have a different opinion had the gun not been refinished.

Welcome to the forums from the Wiregrass! I have a 1948 and 1949 M&P snub. They are fun to shoot. Before you try replacing the hammer and trigger, you might consider just removing the blue with naval jelly. Then, polish them a bit and reinstall. Right now, they are fit to one another and to the rebound slide. You will be taking a chance that replacement, used parts will drop in. It may get expensive buying and trying to get a good fit. Yes, you can always sell them afterward. I guess it just depends on your hassle tolerance.

just leave it as is and enjoy shooting your S&W snub nose....in its present condition...its fine just the way it is.....

It will be fun to shoot. When I started out I purchased a model 520 that I later found out that had been reblued. I learned a lot from that purchase and also got a great revolver to shoot. It's all good enjoy.

Dandy old revolver!! Remember, buy the gun, not the story, unless you know the teller very personally! And even then, be very careful! Dunno what you paid, and am not asking, but IMO, you've got a great snub there, unless you wanted it for strictly a collector. Even then, it's still and dandy snub! I'd certainly be interested in it.

And I gotta say that IH ice box sure does bring back memories. I was driving a Farmall before they started branding them IH. Remember a couple of neighbors who also had one like the one shown. IH also sold chest type deep freezers, cook stoves, and washing machines, as I recall. Early fifties when they did that. Shoo! That was a long time ago!

That's a wonderful old gun..

BTW, I think the refrigerator has been re-finished...
