There is no solution...at least not an easy one. Texting while driving is against the law in many or most states. It's obviously dangerous. It's unnecessary. And yet people persist in doing it.

Laws merely define illegal behavior and set penalties for that behavior. Unless those laws are enforced, and penalties actually imposed for violating them, many people will simply ignore them, especially here in the USA.

I would love to see texting-while-driving carry mandatory jail time...but that ain't gonna happen. The best thing I think most law-abiding motorists can do is install dashcams and drive defensively...
 
Android Auto is creeping towards this.
If your cars audio system is modern enough, you don't need to touch your phone

True - when it works. I've found that in areas with decent cell service Android Auto works pretty darned well.
But when the cell service gets sketchy, so does everything about Android Auto - including navigation.
