J frame grip screw question

Hello,

I recently received these vintage J frame grips in a trade and was wondering if anyone here could point me in the direction of a replacement screw for them.

I have a newer M60 and the screw from it does not fit. These seem to require a thinner screw with thin threads than the one in my revolver.

Any help in this regard will be greatly appreciated. Also,if by any chance you happen to have one you'd be willing to part with, I'm certainly interested in buying it.

The screw for those stocks is somewhat difficult to find. As you've found out, they require a smaller diameter screw than later J-frame stocks use. Your best bet would be to place a copy of your post here in the Want To Buy subforum in the Classifieds forum.

You can get the screw you want for next to nothing if all else fails.
Take the grips to a hardware store. Find a screw that has the proper thread diameter& size. Get it longer than you need if they don't have the proper length. Don't forget the frame thickness also, comes into play. Get a nut or two that fit it. The 1st thing that you will notice is that the screw head is too big. You can take care of that.
If you have access to a drill press, put the screw in the chuck head facing down. You may wish to use the nuts on it so you don't damage the threads. Turn on the press, and use a file, or 80 grit sandpaper on a block of wood. Keep at it until you get the proper head size. Then if the screw is too long, with the nuts on it by the head, cut to length. Then remove the nuts, and the threads will be intact.
This might sound complicated, I have done it, and takes less than 15 minutes. Cost, maybe a dollar. Any questions, feel free to PM me. Bob

My notes indicate that the j-frame & baby j magna grips used a #3-56 screw from 1950-73, and a #5-44 screw from 1973-on. Both oddball thread. I have retapped a beat-up old set of magnas and used a brass #4-40 screw, after turning down the head as bananaman has described. It worked, but was pretty obviously not standard. A nickel-plated screw would be harder to turn down, but might look a litle more corect.
