On the question of bobbed hammer primer ignition: Would it possible to swap a m49 or 649 hammer in to the m36 to lower profile of the hammer spur hang up? Or even a hammerless type hammer?

I have bobbed several J and K frames and have had no trouble with primer ignition. Even with trigger jobs and lightened trigger pulls. I did a trigger job with lighter rebound spring for a friend recently and has had trouble with Russian steel cased ammo, but nothing else.

Regarding the hammer replacement, while I have not gone that route I don't see any problem with doing so.

There's one major downside to removing the hammer spur that doesn't get mentioned. Revolvers do malfunction. The immediate action drill for a slew of malfunctions that involve the trigger not being able to move is to reach up and cock the hammer. Once I reduce the "to do" list to manageable size, replacing the spur less hammers on my Js is going to happen.

You might check Ebay or GB, there were some bobbed hammers for J Frames listed that might ease your concern about the 49 one.

I have a factory bobbed K Frame and never an issue. Closest I can come to a J Frame.

My favorite is the 640 on the night stand.

Bobbed the hammer on the K-frame 65-3 heavy 3" barrel .357 magnum. A favorite 80's FBI carry option. Acquired an as-new example, found a new hammer replacement to bob; dremel cut-off wheel, grind sharp edge, polish, done. Filed off single-action notch so its double-action only.

On the J-frame I bobbed a Taurus M85, filed off the single-action notch as well.
Functions perfectly.
