J&G Model 10 Report

... A Model 10 that lives in a holster for 8 hours a day and then gets slammed into a metal rack at 7am by a tired night shift guard trying to go home usually won't win any beauty contests:D
To boot, the handguns are probably randomly assigned each shift. No incentive for the guards to try to take care of one and keep it nice.

Stainless cleans up fairly well

Here is a security company Ruger Police Service Six .38 special I got for $125.00, IIRC, a few years ago. It was mistreated, even though it was a off-beat brand I felt compassion and rescued it.

After some judicious work with a bead blaster and some serious cleaning (glass beads get everywhere) it turned out like this. I gave it to my brother.

I was gonna say, there is nothing wrong with takin' these old M10's and parkerizing them......they just beg for a home park job, the finish would nearly last another lifetime or two....

one day all of the bargin priced trade ins will be gone. and there will be only be locked versions available to the public. Can a man really have too many of these project guns in the back of the safe. If I didnt have 2 boys in college I would order a dozen of them and it would be cheaper than tuition.....:)

I have ugly that shoot tiny groups. Maybe they work harder and are grateful for a good home. Kind of like a dog from the pound..

These are the last of the trade ins, I think we'll see. The odd security company that is holding on to older S&W revolvers and getting the last drop of use out of them are the ones that are trading them off now. No PD I know of issues revolvers anymore, I doubt there are any. A few security companies still carry 64-7's and -8's because they are still the same price as Glocks and some states mandate rent-a-cop companies to carry .38 revolvers with no more than a 7 round capacity, i.e. the reason S&W probably still makes 64's. I heard from a guard on another forum who carries a 686+ loaded with .38+p only, but these cost more than 64's so this is rare.

The "real" era of the trade ins, at least that I saw, was the early to late 90's when PD's and security companies really dumped a lot of wheelguns and went to autos almost en-masse. I recall seeing 10's, 64's, 65's, 66's, etc. for under $100 in that kind of well used shape at gun shows in the late 90's. And I mean tables full of them not just onesies and twosies. If I had been 21 at the time and had the money I would have bought dozens of them.

I don't see beater Model 10's going up in price much, there were many, many made and these are not collectible in this condition. A lot of the J&G $180 Model 10's, I would bet, are now sitting on gun show and gun shop racks marked at $300 and probably selling.

I know that there are some J&G 10's & 64's floating around on local forums for much more. They might have been cleaned up a little but are still not worth the asking prices. Plenty of first time and uninformed buyers will bite though.

I ordered a M10 std from them this past Monday. Bought it fair and square. Gave them credit card, FFL, everything. Requested and was assured a VG. Guy calls Thurs PM and says they're out of std barrel and would I take a heavy barrel for $10 more. I consented. (Should have insisted on same price.) Got him to describe it to me. He said it had some holster wear and a few dings. That's character. I can live with that but if it has a bad turn ring it"s gonna go right back. End of Rant.

Don't be afraid of a turn ring on a security trade in revolver....most times they were unloaded before they were either put in the rack after a shift or turned over to another guard...each guard has their own 18 rounds they carry, and the oncoming guy just drops his 6 in the chambers and the off duty guy takes his 6 with him....99% of the time the guns don't leave with the guard, they just turn them over to the guy who relieves them or put them in a rack in the arms room...chances are they have been unloaded-loaded a million times but haven't seen 100 rounds.

I have seen security guards with the 6-round loop cartridge holder on their belt, and the brass had verdigris that was growing over the leather.......shows how much they shoot those guns, those rounds probably hadn't moved from those loops in 10 years.

One job I worked we had Glocks, same deal, we carried our 3 mags on our belts, but drew our Glock from the arms room, stuck the mag in, racked the slide......12 hours later, drop the mag, jack the round out of the chamber, put it back in the arms room rack......the guns looked like they had been fired a lot just from daily unloading and loading but many had less than a few hundred rounds through them.

I think that you should try shooting it first, if it functions well and shoots strait then polish it up and have your local smith hot blue it. It may just be a champ needing new clothes.

I received Model 10 from J&G out of the "good" conditioned batch and it was better than I expected. The only bad thing were the grips--they are pretty beat. But the bluing is good and the bore is bright and shiny, the lock up tight. Just got it Friday. I took it to the range yesterday and it shot very well. Excellent SA pull that you would expect from S&W. I am quite pleased for $189.
Now if anyone has a pair of nice K frame square butt grips....let me know--lol.

I'm disappointed to hear of s3dcor's experience with J&G.

I bought an AR-15 from them & couldn't be happier.

A while ago, I looked at the image they have on their website for the M10s & they look like crap! I thought about getting one, but after seeing their pics, I decided against it.

Now I'm really glad I didn't buy one.
