The model 17 is a target pistol, designed to shoot bullseye targets at 25 yds to 50 yards with a 6:00 hold. There is no better iron sight for that application than a wide Patridge front, tall square notch rear, all dead black. I have a carbide smoker to keep them dead black.
That sharp Patridge blade is not designed for holsters either. It will drag leather fragments each time you draw, while wearing the sight to shiny roundness.
If you want to plink, there are other pistols more suitable, many with pinned sights. I think there is a .22 LR version of the M19/M66 Combat Magnum with a 4" barrel and pinned ramp front. Alternate blades include a red plastic insert (milling a dovetail into the blade is an easy job for a gunsmith), or a gold bead, even a fiber-optic (yechh!). I put tritium sights on one revolver (686, 4") which doubles as a three-dot sight in daylight.
If pinned, S&W uses a 1/16" roll pin. You can reuse the roll pin, but you need to drill the new blade after inserting it. Drill halfway from each side with a #52 (please check) drill through the existing hole in the ramp.
Brownells has kits for molding a plastic insert into a milled front blade, in various colors. That's the right way. Paint is only slightly more durable than carbide smoke.
