...marked with the "L" and arrow for the lock, but no lock hole! Of course it came with two keys. :) The gun is not cut for moon clips. Anyone seen one of these? (Haven't cleaned it up yet).

There is a funny story that goes with it. I've been looking for a 442/642 with no lock, but the only one in the area I could find was cut for moon clips. I went back today since my best friend was going, and I about convinced myself to buy it. (Based on everyone's inputs from my other post).

Well of course that gun was sold, and saw this one for $609. It had the crimson grips, which I didn't want because I plan to use the Barami grips, and let the salesman know that. He walked around a little bit and came back and said I'll sell you this one without the grips. Keep in mind they have the locked 642's on sale right now for $349. I asked how much, and he said $349. I said, "Ring me up!" So after the rebate, I got the gun for $322.99 out the door!

GREAT FIND!!! My guess, and that's just what it is, is that your 642-2 got through QC without someone noticing that the lock hole had not been drilled. Is the frame cut/relieved for the lock flag?

You did well! Interesting about the arrow but no lock hole. I wonder what S&W would say if you enquired?

Class III,

I'm not 100% sure what the "lock flag" is, but I think the answer is yes. Does this mean that my gun has the lock, but no key hole?

tekarra,

What question would you ask them?

thanks,

Take a look at the attached jpg of my M60-14. I took out the lock flag and left the lock in place to keep dirt, pocket lint... from getting into the works. My 60-14 can not lock since the flag/whatever S & W wants to call it is not present. Your 642-2 does NOT have the lock in place as the lock rides in the hole. Since your 642-2 does not have the hole, no lock can be present. I wanted to know if your frame was cut for the flag. If you look at the frame of my 60-14, just to the left of the hammer you can see an open slot where the flag use to be.

only way to see if it has the internal lock is to remove the sideplate

His gun is a Centennial frame. There will be no externally visible cuts for the lock/flag at the hammer area.

Edit: carbofan21 beat me to it

I was hoping for Class III's response about the lock needing to ride in the key hole. Does anyone else agree with this theory?

It makes sense but I'd still be curious as to what may be lurking inside until I removed the sideplate and took a peek inside.

Take a look at this YouTube video 4:45 to 6:00 minute time frame. It shows the internal flag being removed from a centennial frame. At 5:27 the flag is removed letting you get a good look at the lock cam. Without the hole in the frame there is no place for the lock to rest, hense my opinion that this 642-2 has no lock installed. But, I guess we won't know for sure until KNG post a picture with the sideplate removed.

YouTube - S&W Internal Lock Removal

Just noticed that KNG's 642-2 does not have the small hole drilled in the frame for the flag pivot pin, reinforcing my opinion that this particular 642-2 has no lockworks.

Class III,

Believe it or not, I already looked at that video. As far as me removing the side plate, probably not gonna happen. I bought this gun for a carry piece, and I wouldn't trust my gunsmithing skills to do that task.

thanks,
-Kyle

I'm going to email S&W with the two pictures in this post. Would it be more effective to ask "about the operation of the internal lock on my gun", or should I simply ask if this is indeed a 642-2 shipped with no internal lock?

I recently bought a new 642 - 1 with no lock at my LGS...and it isn't marked with an "L" nor is the frame cut for a lock. I know that S&W is making a couple of models now without the lock...and I hope more to come!

GKC,

Is it a marked 642-1 or 642-2? Is it cut for moon clips?

thanks for the help,
-Kyle

I emailed S&W today asking if it was shipped with the locking flag, and if it was a transitional model. I included the serial number and pics in this post.

For now I'm not going to shoot it. It's probably worth a bunch of money. :) I guess it's a good excuse to buy another one to shoot/carry!

So I got a response today from S&W...I specifically mentioned the "L" and arrow.

Here was my response:

"Hello, we are making runs of the 642's without the lock.

Regards, Paul Gazda
1-800-331-0852 Ext. 2905"

Didn't really answer my question.

So has anyone seen a 642-2 without the lock?

"Hello, we are making runs of the 642's without the lock."

lol. gotta love those non-answer answers. as to your gun being worth a whole bunch of money, i would say it's worth at least $350 these days. collector's item? probably not so much.

taking off the sideplate is easy. there are videos on youtube to show you how to do it (tapping method). whatever you do, just don't pry it off

Well I finally got an official S&W answer to my question, "My 642-2 is a non-lock model. Is this unusual or in error?"

The answer is:

"No, we make 642-2 with and without the lock, it depends on how it is ordered.

Regards, Paul Gazda
1-800-331-0852 Ext. 2905"

However, I've still yet to see another 642-2 without the lock. :p
