Just bought M&P 45, how did I do?

Went for my Thursday evening 22 Bullseye competition and afterwards was looking in the gun cases in the LGS. They had a used M&P 45 with box, ex. mag and TruGlo sights already installed (OEM included as well) priced at $550. I looked it over, but wasn't thrilled about the sights (green and were hard for me to pick out). When the owner went to the back to get the box, he found a 2nd M&P 45 that had been overlooked. This one had stock sights, which for me was better than the TruGlo. Came in S&W box, all accessories and 2 mags. I was able to bring this one home for $500 out the door ($467.28 + tax).

Okay, here are my questions:

1) The gun came in a BLACK S&W plastic case. New ones come in Blue. Was there a reason S&W changed the plastic cases?

2) The gun dates to 2007 (spent case/test fire date of 7-27-07). Are there any issues with the guns manufactured from that time frame? Ser. # MPU0611

The gun appears to have been shot very little and is in excellent condition. Trigger seems okay, You cannot hear it re-set, but can feel it. It has a very short reset.

I have had my eyes on the M&P series for a while and knew eventually I'd end up with the 9mm and a 45; the 45 came first! Gonna take it down, clean & lube and then take it Sat. or Sun. to the range for test firing. Good thing is, if I have any issues, the guys in the gun shop will be right there to see for themselves.

Just hoping the early versions didn't have any issues; and if they did, would appreciate a heads up from other members! So, how did I do?

There are better prices for used M&P .45s. Still, it's not a bad deal.

They came with black cases at first and now they're blue. Who cares what color the case is? I have a stack of gun boxes like that and never use them. The only value is when selling the gun.

My M&P45 is also MPUxxxx, pretty close to yours, about 700 away. The trigger is still so-so after a fair amount of shooting. The gun is the most accurate of the several M&Ps I have owned. It does appear to have a fairly tight chamber with a short throat or leade. I had to very slightly reduce my usual COL of my handloads to get proper functioning. No fault of the gun.

I have no reservations about the gun. It currently has a light mounted for "night duty." If your gun is in good, original condition and you can manage the trigger you should be all set.

Thanks for the reply, I see you're a "Hoosier" too! As long as the gun functions, the trigger is a non-issue. Will shoot some factory ball through it, and if I get busy; I'll try a few reloads as well. My Ruger SR1911 shoots anything I run through it; I'm hoping the M&P will follow suite.

If you like it enjoy it. When you ask opinions you start to doubt you did the right thing. Don't let anyone destroy your excitement. You have the shop you cover any issues and I'm sure they will if any arise. Shoot safe have fun. My 2cents!!

Maybe an upgraded striker. But only if you need it, as the .45 M&P's are just about bulletproof. And, if you use the search feature, and know how, a person can "massage"(read that very slightly bend) the trigger bar on a .45 and get a crisp trigger reset, w/o having to buy extra parts to "Make it right". I have a 2010 .45FS that I wish you could feel the trigger on. It mimics a well set up 1911(except for the long trigger take-up, of course!) so well, that I have had several people offer to buy it. It's not magic, anyone can do it. I just recently purchased a Colt Rail Gun 1911, and promptly sold it due to the fact that while I wanted one, in comparison to my M&P .45FS, I found no real reason to need it, as they felt just almost the same to me. And trust me, I do like properly set-up 1911's. A lot. Carried them for years, and still love 'em. But the price of a good 1911 is getting just too rich for my blood(and budget!).

Took my new (to me) M&P 45 to the indoor range today. Cleaned & lubed it the night before; wasn't very dirty and after cleaning, looked like new anyway!

Shot 25 rounds of the new Federal Aluminum 230 gr. FMJ ammo through it, just to see if it would feed/function-it did and was VERY accurate out of this and my Ruger SR1911 (can't shoot one and not the other, you know). 25 rounds through the Ruger as well. I have to say, the new Federal Aluminum ammo has shot very well for me, through my guns-both the 9mm and now the 45 acp. I can see for the price ($9.97/9mm; $14.97/45acp) that I'll keep a few boxes on hand; for the days I don't want to chase brass around the range!

Next up-Winchester White box 230 gr. FMJ. I know some may diss this ammo, but it functioned flawlessly through both of my 45's, and both blew one ragged hole in their respective targets. Side by side, you'd never know which gun shot which group! About 30 rounds through each gun.

The range was pretty busy today, and so was the shop. I took the time to stop and show John (one of the instructors) my targets from the M&P. He carries one himself and uses it for training also. Told him I was very happy with the M&P-especially since it shot on par with my Ruger SR1911. You can never have too many good shooting 45"s!

All in all, a very good day. Now looking for a holster(s) for the new addition. I've found that some holsters advertised to fit ALL models of the M&P's, don't seem to fit the 45. So being cautious about ordering online/un-tried. I'm sure, as with my other handguns; I'll come up with at least a few that will work

As a side note, I was glad that at least on this first outing, I didn't have any issues with the slide going into battery with an inserted magazine. I don't slam my magazines in the first place; but would be uncomfortable if it started happening on a regular basis. Otherwise, I couldn't be happier with my new M&P. I can see at least one more in my future! (9mm)

Yes, the 45 is slightly different than the other M&Ps. So, you'll have to get a holster specifically for it.

The 9mm comes out to $0.21 per round for me, with tax and the 45acp comes out to $0.32 per round. As much as I hate not buying reloadable ammo, sometimes it's just nice not to have to chase it after shooting!

I had shot a few boxes of the 9mm, and it runs like a house on fire through my guns. The first box of 45acp I checked out, the bullets were so loose in the case, you could push them further in with finger pressure. I knew that wouldn't be a good thing, so until this past Friday, I wouldn't buy them. When I checked the box that I bought, all seemed fine. The accuracy of this ammo through my guns is exceptional, compared to some other brass cased factory ammo. If I were not a reloader, I'd buy this all the time!

I've not tried the Perfecta ammo yet, but plan to in the near future. The 9mm is $13.97/box and the 45acp is $18.97/box + 7% tax here ($14.95; $20.30). About $0.30 per round/9mm & $0.40/45acp. Not bad for reloadable brass cased ammo. Otherwise, 9mm REM-UMC can be had for $12.99/box 9mm and $23.99/box 45acp. And at least around this area, all the stores that carry ammo are all stocked up, and then some. Some stores have even lifted the 3-4 box limit on purchases, with the exception of 22's, and those are still hard to come.

I haven't used the Perfecta .45, but I've run a few boxes of the 9mm and found it to be reasonably good ammo. I think I read on another forum that it's off label Fiocchi.

Anymore, I have a hard time paying $14 or $15 for a box of 50 rounds of 9mm. When I look hard enough online, I'm usually able to find Blazer Brass or something similar for ~$0.24 a round. Keeps me from buying anything but the Federal aluminum cased rounds from WM.

Just a quick update: Went yesterday to the range and took my SD9VE and the M&P 45. Ran a full box of the Federal Aluminum 230 gr. FMJ and 40 rounds of the WWB through the 45-again, no issues at all. Really liking the M&P and already thinking of my next purchases (9mm & 22).

Snagged an extra mag on E-bay yesterday (New $24.89/free ship) and received a new Blackhawk CQC Serpa holster and double mag carrier, which also came via E-bay. Also picked up 2 new mags for the SD9VE from ADP3 right here in the classifieds. They ran flawlessly, as do my original 2 mags.

All in all, a good day to be a S&W owner, and always a good day to go shooting!

I am a bit torn here. I traded my M&P 45 for an M&P 9 3 days ago.... I have converted everything to 9 mm. I got my wife off a 5 shot .38 special and bought her an SD9VE. Her choice, not mine.. I wanted to buy her a Shield but she had problems racking the slide with it.. and even tho the trigger is nothing to write home about, she is in love with it and really shoots it well, standing, movings. rolling.. and with both hands.. ah well.. I reload and wanted to quit changing every thing over and over.. hence the 9mm. I am IMPRESSED!!!!! It does not care if I give it 115 grain, 124-5, or 135 gr Gold Dots.. it is a tight shooter and LOTS lighter to carry around all day.. and I do carry all day. Plus I am enamored of 17 +1 in the piece and 17 more on my hip.. yes I believe in carrying another mag.. always have.. but it is all LIGHTER!.. I have to go light.. I am sick and getting weaker and this is the perfect fix.. Any suggestions on which grain fodder to buy to load>

Made my Sunday trip to the range. Snowed today in Indiana :-(
Anyway, ran another box of the Federal Aluminum ammo through the M&P; also tried out 2 mags I purchased off of E-bay, both functioned with no issues.

I read the Forum daily, When I was considering buying my SD9VE, I almost didn't because of all the issues people were having with it. Same for the M&P series; just look at some of the issues people report here. Am I glad I bought mine? Absolutely! Will I purchase a 9mm and 22? Pretty sure that's gonna happen Do I hope they will turn out like my first 2? You know I do!

Anyway, just an update on the 45 and the 2 extra mags I just purchased.

Update...

Went to the range today, ran a box of REM-UMC (green/white box) through the M&P 45. Ran all 4 mags with no issues. I'm very happy with the 45; reliable, accurate and fun to shoot!

Hard to pick a favorite

But if I absolutely had to, I would choose my 45c over my 40c or 9c. I live in Mass and the 10.5lb trigger out of the box was tough to love. Put in the DCAEK and now I spend my spare time looking for good, reasonably priced ammo for it.
I've used Remington, Federal and WWB with no problems whatsoever.

Enjoy your 45. The more you shoot it, the more you'll like it.
