I just purchased a Model 29-2 and put 30 rounds through it and love it. I will never sell. I paid under $500 from a close friends family member. The blueing is 110% and the action is very tight. The only down side is it only came with the original bill of sale and Herretts grips. He threw away the original box and grips. I bought new ones direct from S&W as you can see and I'm looking for originals. I was wondering if anyone could estimate the manufacture date for me. The serial number is N487204.

Date and Grips

Welcome to the Forum, and congratulations on a great looking M29 at a great price.

SCSW-3 says your gun was shipped in the 1977-1978 time frame - probably 1978.

The correct original grips would be the target style made of Goncalo Alves wood with the "football" cartridge relief on the left panel and with stainless steel medallion backing discs (washers) on the back side.

Enjoy your new toy! :D

29-2

don't know if it is the picture lighting, but your rear sight looks like an aftermarket, if it is you should be able to find an original on here, s&w does not have them anymore.

Nice pickup. Trying to get my hands on a 29-2 myself. That sight does look after market. Just out of curiosity what type of rounds you use?

Heres a few pictures of the sights. Please tell me if you think they are aftermarket. I'm new to S&W revolvers. In response to the ammo question, I have fired 180gr, 200gr and 240gr target ammo through the gun. But I keep Speer Handgun Hunting High-performance Cartridges loaded in case someone decides to surprise me in the middle of the night.

Yes, they are definitely not S&W factory sights.
But you still got a great revolver for a good price, congratulations.

those are millet sights....you could probably sell those on gunbroker or ebay...or here...for $50 bucks to offset the cost of originals...which will cost you around a $100 bill....very nice looking gun though.

Very nice magnum you have. If your gonna' shoot it, leave the Millets on it. They're great sights.

Yep. Good advice from GF. You may want to buy factory original sights for restoration purposes but Millets are an outstanding upgrade, IMHO.

A great buy on a great pistol.....

I bought a Model 29 - 2 at a local gun shop today...it is nickle, six inch barrel, and looks as if it has rarely (if ever) been fired. I paid $625 for it. The serial number range is N68xxxx. I took a picture with my cell phone, but I can't get it to post here. (I am a dummy, technically.)

Rear sights

Can someone post a picture(s) of rear sights that a 29-2 would come with from the factory? Thanks

Not a straight on view but, these pics were handy for me.
Hope it helps.

New grips for my 29-2

I just bought new grips for my new baby. They look great! I also bought a set of original grips that came off a .41 mag but would fit any N-frame and a new pair of Rosewood square butt grips for N-frames direct from S&W. Looking to trade one or both with or without some cash for sights that would go on a model 29-2 from the late 70's.
