At a gun show this weekend I ran across what appeared to be a five (5) inch barrel K-22. The lettering on the barrel was factory and where it should be, not as it would be if a six inch barrel was cut down. About 94%, strong rifling, magna stocks and typically tight S&W action. I did not write down the serial number.
Was such a K-22 made? If so how many?
Thanks,

!!~Possibly~!!

Hi Bob,

There are a few of these know to exist, but without verification by a Research Letter from the Factory Historian(Roy Jinks)it's all speculation at this point!! Also, due to the minimal amount of these Revolvers produced, knowing the Serial Number would be of no help!!

I owned one just as you described but never lettered it. Traded it a awhile back. Kinda wished I'd kept it....

I gave up on finding a factory 5" K-22. Here is a previous Forum discussion of the 5" K-22 I had Hamilton Bowen build for me.

I would not rely on the appearance of "centered" barrel roll-marks to determine a factory original. Here is how my cut 6" barrel turned out.

If someone has a factory lettered 5" K-22 we would love to see pictures.

Why did you not pick it up? worth the chance! It would have been an easy sell even if non factory to guys like me who love a well built altered 5"er, very great barrel length, sorta still a target gun, but small enough to tote around, would have made a dandy trap line gun! What was the guy asking?

Russ, that gun is sweet. Good to talk to you last nite. I'm also curious as to how much the gun was for sale for. If it was reasonable and the gun had no real issues, it would have been a good buy. Larry

5" K22

Not sure I would have popped $750 for it either. Not without the letter.
What gun show were you at in SW New Mexico? Didn't know they had shows in that area. :-) Maybe Tombstone?

IMO you've done the best possible thing but also in the best possible way. People should have just what they want. But I especially appreciate those modified guns done well and that look like a factory produced model. Bravo!

K-22 5 inch

The gun show was in Las Cruces, NM. We have two big shows here and several smaller ones in-between. Southwest NM is an error, I should have said Southest NM!
The verification letter to Roy went out today. If the gun is factory, I will buy it. Maybe even if not factory it may follow me home!

Bob, keep us posted, both HRichard and I would like to hear more, as always, all my best, Joe. PS, we miss having coffee and seeing you on a regular basis.

The thing that you must remember with S&W's is that the company was willing to do most anything for the right price. If they could make an extra $5 to cut down a barrel, they would do it to sell a gun.

Call Roy on Monday and he will most likely let you know if it shipped as a 5".:D
