Hi everybody. Need some help. I'd like to ID the correct screwdriver for my K22 2nd model Masterpiece. Also for a later K22 Masterpiece c1955. Did some research on our site and found a lot of info on the screwdrivers regarding different configurations, materials, finishes, etc, but haven't found conclusive info on their specific dates. Thank you all in advance.

While I'm in complete agreement with Bruce, I can't prove it. A 1955 vintage K22 should have had a nearly identical screwdriver, with the exception that instead of nickel plating, it would have had black oxide. Thats a coating much like a dull blue.

What I think we concluded over time is that it was just a variation in production. Not a lot of thought or effort, much less engineering went into them.

At one point Roy stated that they jobbed them out from time to time. Then in a later inquiry he said they were made in-house in large quantities. That was kind of confusing, and I really don't know if he researched it, or if they made them in-house when they had the time and jobbed some out when they didn't. That last seems more fitting to how manufacturers operate. About all we know is that they appeared in both variants.

Thanks to all for your help. I'll now know what screwdriver to look for for my K22/40 Masterpiece (my K22/1955 has the proper sight adjustment tool). My K22/40 is S/N 6929XX and according to S&W Letter, was shipped to Waltham, MA on July 11, 1940. It has a 98+% Blued finish with fading case colors on the hammer & trigger. The grips are unnumbered Magna grips. The big plus is that is has a MINT red picture box. Pictures to follow. Thanks Again!

plus the fact they shipped the guns with whatever tools/kits they had "on hand" at any given time and where the "parts box" came from....some folks call this the "parts bin theory", old stuff at the bottom of the 'box' ( drawer...?) new inventory gets dumped in ,on top and as they pull parts out, voila, they are now back down to the bottom of the drawer.....they don't care, just filling the orders.............
no doubt about the 'prewar' stuff, with the much 'smaller' screw slots...........
my aunt who worked for Richman Bros. tailors years ago, had a box full of old sewing machine screwdrivers and they were the "same"!!!!(supplied by Singer Sewing mach.company????)

Uh-Oh. I've been procrastinatin' while I'm figgering out the photo thing. I garantee you won't be disappointed.

Yes, I do believe the man said a MINT red picture box. I don't know if I have ever seen one that minty...
