I went to a show in Brooksville, FL today and bought a K-38 Model 14-1 (K431568). It is a 4-screw, and it has the L on the cylinder face showing the the dash 1 change to LH thread on the ejector thread. It is very fresh, and about 98% in finish. However, it does not have diamond target stocks. My question, before admitting how much I paid, is how much does not having the diamond stocks hurt the value of the gun?

Diamond targets were not numbered to the gun so if your gun shipped with a set it will not be difficult to replace the set. If your gun letters with magnas on the other hand....that will be tough as they would have been numbered to the gun.

I probably won't seek to letter the gun since I wasn't looking to obtain a rare piece per se. Although it's in high condition, it really is a shooter. But I'd love to find a set of diamond targets for it though, just on principle.

I paid $550 for it. I beat on the guy for about an hour, and he just wouldn't come off his asking price. The condition sold me finally, as well as the fact that the football targets are very nice in their own right.

I also bought a Model 10-2 (C571274) that is all correct (and in about 99% condition) from another collector for $400. Maybe not a home run, but a good find.

The Brooksville show is put on by the Hernando Sportsmen's Club a few times a year. It's in a small venue but is always well attended. Mostly collectible stuff from antique to modern, and few "dealers." I had a great time, considering the wobbly legs and bad back.

i would have paid $550 for it! that is in the range of what I paid for each of my 14-1's, one of which was wearing non diamond magnas which I replaced with targets. You got a good deal IMHO.

You did not get hurt on the price. My take is that it probably shipped with diamond magnas, and a prior owner removed those in later years to put on some target stocks. The only ones he had or could buy were post-1968 target stocks, so that's what he put on. If it had come with diamond targets, it would probably not have been necessary to replace them with the later stocks on it now.

Unnumbered diamond targets would be completely appropriate for that gun, as would diamond magnas -- either unnumbered or numbered in the 400000-450000 range.

Fine score!
