I just picked up a 64-6 that had Uncle Mike rubber grips on it. I grabbed some Hogue rubbers for it because the UMs were a bit big for me. The Hogues fit my hand nicely but fit the gun terribly along the backstrap and as such are not particularly comfortable to fire. I need something better. I am looking at Badger, VZ, and Altamont right now but I am having trouble discerning some things from the pics. Due to my small hands I prefer to have something not too bulky front to back but I do like finger grooves. The VZ don't cover the backstrap but am not sure about the others. Any help or other suggestions are welcome.
My beef with almost every after-market (and some factory) grips that don't cover the backstrap is the poor wood-to-metal fit. The web of my hand ends up against bare metal at the top. I wish stock makers would build them proud of the backstrap/frame and let me sand them to final fit on my gun.
The rubber (or whatever) Hogues just have a flimsy piece at the top left side of the backstrap that leaves the web of your hand unprotected.
The UMs are my hands-down favorite on K-frame RB revolvers, especially magnums. But I use them on all my K-frames so they all have the same grip.
I suffer from stubby fingers myself. I've found the Hogue JMs work well for me, too. Pachmayr Compact Professionals would probably fit your hand well but have the same problem as Hogues.
I probably have a box full of grips for every make/model revolver I own. It's always trial & error to find what works.
Your grip technique can help. Try to get the web of your hand in as firm contact with the grip frame as you can. When I draw, the first point of contact is the web of my hand to the top of the grip. The rest of my grip is indexed from there as I roll my hand into place.
This not only helps save the skin on your hand, but IMO, is essential to accurate shooting. If that portion of the grip isn't in good contact with your hand, it's free to recoil in different directions.
