K frame grip recommendations

I have a old set of Herrett smooth targets on my 64-3. As you can see from the pic the frame is just a bit proud in the middle of the palm area but I cannot feel it and these work very good when shooting.

Hideout grips - made for pocket or concealed carry.
Not made for show pony work, but they are minimalist. They are nice for smaller hands, as they have an open backstrap and generous palm swell.

1 had customized a set a bit through hand sanding and a light coat of Ren wax to even out the color/finish.

If you have smaller hands I'll 3rd (?) the Hogue Bantam grips. I have them in wood and rubber. I prefer the wood. I have them on my 69 like as shown in post 11. Mine are the less expensive Pau Ferro wood, which I think looks great. I don't have small hands but I wanted the bantams for concealed carry, AIWB. Honestly they're a bit brutal with fairly hot 44 magnums. I did my qualification with them and the hotter magnums without difficulty but there was blood. With 44 specials or in your case 38 specials they should be just fine.

I did have some fit issues initially but Hogue addressed the issues without cost to me and in a timely manner. I didn't try them on my older model 19 RB (I guess I should) but I suspect the model 69, although an L frame, might differ a bit from the standard L frame.

To be honest the Hogue literature doesn't specifically mention the the grips fitting the 69 but does mention by model numbers as fitting other L frames. They could have wiggled out of accepting responsibility for the fit issue based on that but they didn't even bring that up, which surprised me. I have a pretty good impression of Hogue based on my experience with them.

PS: Aren't you proud of me. I didn't say fitment, not once!

I just picked up a 64-6 that had Uncle Mike rubber grips on it. I grabbed some Hogue rubbers for it because the UMs were a bit big for me. The Hogues fit my hand nicely but fit the gun terribly along the backstrap and as such are not particularly comfortable to fire. I need something better. I am looking at Badger, VZ, and Altamont right now but I am having trouble discerning some things from the pics. Due to my small hands I prefer to have something not too bulky front to back but I do like finger grooves. The VZ don't cover the backstrap but am not sure about the others. Any help or other suggestions are welcome.

My beef with almost every after-market (and some factory) grips that don't cover the backstrap is the poor wood-to-metal fit. The web of my hand ends up against bare metal at the top. I wish stock makers would build them proud of the backstrap/frame and let me sand them to final fit on my gun.

The rubber (or whatever) Hogues just have a flimsy piece at the top left side of the backstrap that leaves the web of your hand unprotected.

The UMs are my hands-down favorite on K-frame RB revolvers, especially magnums. But I use them on all my K-frames so they all have the same grip.

I suffer from stubby fingers myself. I've found the Hogue JMs work well for me, too. Pachmayr Compact Professionals would probably fit your hand well but have the same problem as Hogues.

I probably have a box full of grips for every make/model revolver I own. It's always trial & error to find what works.

Your grip technique can help. Try to get the web of your hand in as firm contact with the grip frame as you can. When I draw, the first point of contact is the web of my hand to the top of the grip. The rest of my grip is indexed from there as I roll my hand into place.

This not only helps save the skin on your hand, but IMO, is essential to accurate shooting. If that portion of the grip isn't in good contact with your hand, it's free to recoil in different directions.

I guess I should post a pic of the problem. I am leaning towards the VZ.

Phil and John have the right idea.

Call Herrett's Stocks: herrettsstocks.com

You gotta love a company that makes your stocks to fit your hands based a drawing of your mitt. Every pair they've made for me feels as though they had my hand -- not just a two-dimensional drawing -- when they made my stocks.

Here's a shot of my latest finger grooved Jordan Trooper in bubinga wood. I asked them to shave off a little at the back bottom to conform to the revolver's round butt.

You get what you pay for!
