K38 Pawn w/Bubba Grips Has Hidden Issue

I really like the OP’s gun. It is not “butchered” or bubba-fied. It was improved for its actual use by an owner who used his gun.

Some of you guys crack me up.

I call'em as I see'em.

Gary has a point!

If I'd have ever seen one, grabbed it and run like a thief in the night, the first place I'd have run to after seeing that drunken beaver gnawing job would be to my grinding wheel---and make it pretty----might've even finished up the job with the polishing wheel across from the grinding wheel----might've even touched things up with some cold blue.

Then again, I'd do all that just 'cause I'd want to----not because that's how I made my living---and was only doing it to make my grips fit!

I'm not offended by any of the above. I like the gun as is, and appreciate the background info, opinion, and history from you all. Those grips really do feel unbelievable. The story is really not complete though without the picture of the model 15 that was bought a week prior that was previously owned by the same officer...Here it is again, even though i posted about it previously...

You clearly lucked out with the fit of the grips! They were made to order to fit the paws paying the bill. I wasn't so lucky with my one and only set of Ropers. They were for an N frame---thumb rest targets---great piece of wood--especially compared to many of the Ropers I'd seen---which I referred to as "fence post grade wood". The bad news is they were clearly made for the likes of Andre The Giant, and didn't even come close to fitting my merely average size paws---never mind they were great to look at!

That frame cut is looking kind of rough

Agreed.
Makes me think maybe someone acquired the Fuzzy stocks and then modified the gun to fit them to it.
The stocks are worth half of what the OP paid for the gun. That's the good news.
The bad news is that the modifications to the grip frame also altered/defaced the only serial number that matters - the "official" frame serial number on the butt.
As glowe said, that completely obliterates any collector value, and many knowledgeable people wouldn't even consider purchasing the gun - due to the "altered" serial number. That alteration technically makes it an illegally-altered firearm. The chances of the altered serial number ever being an issue with the BATFE are very slim, but still not zero.
On the other hand, another way of looking at it is that the OP bought a set of collectable stocks worth $200 in the deal, so they really only paid $200 for a shooter-grade revolver (with an altered serial number).
These days there aren't very many $200 shooter-grade S&W revolvers to be found anywhere.
JMO, and YMMV...

Cool, they do feel nice in the hand, maybe I'll just leave them on. I have a set of old targets that covers the frame cut. Either way, a pretty nice find I think for $400 out the door. I've never had a five screw before. Pretty nice fit and finish.

I would take it. Looks like it would be some nice target grips for that gun, plus the large S&W target grips would cover the cut off area.

If only I had known when I had the neon green front sight insert put on my M28 and and replaced the rear blade with a white outline and inserted and removed it from the holster multiple times per shift and shot untold rounds through it that I was desecrating a priceless artifact and depriving a future collector of the opportunity to rub it with Ren wax and drool over it...I'd have done exactly what I did. It was my property and my tool to do my job and go home alive to my wife and kids at end of watch. It did its job and so I'm here to be a grumpy, contrary old man.

Someone else has it now and I hope they shoot the daylights out of it and enjoy it as a gun and not a work of art and wish the same for the OP and his retired LEO pieces.

You do not need to malign collectors since most are members interested in preserving S&Ws. Everyone is entitled to their opinion and since the OP values them we were happy to comply. Safe queen collectors are one way to go, gun bubbas are another way and I am neither. I am part of the the majority of us that do not need to collect only safe queens and if we did would shoot them. I do not own a gun that I have not shot. Others collect S&Ws and see them as art.
