There is a K38 available locally for sale. The serial no. is K561526 , can someone give me an idea of year & model.

It's a 1963 shipped gun per the SN. 4" barrel = model 15 (Combat Masterpiece, ramp front sight); 6" barrel = model 14 (Target Masterpiece, Patridge front sight). Hope this is helpful.

Model 14's are great shooters and extremely accurate and I have a pre 14 with 6 inch barrel made in 1952 and a 14-4 with 8 3/8 inch barrel made in 1979.

It should be stamped 14-2 inside the crane if it is a Model 14 Masterpiece.
I think the 14-1 was made into 1961.

There were small production runs of 4" model 14s, most famous were the Dayton, OH police guns in 1965. These would have the heavy barrel of the 14, not the tapered barrel of the (otherwise similar) 15. Is yours in the K 620000 + serial number range?

This is likely one of the Dayton PD guns. Others who actually have one might chime in . If you are interested in being sure, a factory historical letter may be in order:

When I bought this gun from a retired deputy sheriff, I was surprised at the 4" bbl as I thought that all model 14s were 6" guns.

Then I thought that all model 15s were 4" guns, but today I found this 6" model 15 on gunsamerica....

Now, on gunsamerica this morning, I fount this little jewell that is alleged to be a 15-3...

Looks like the 15 with adjustable target sights. I used them in the Air Force only they were not nickel. For a short barrel they were accurate.
