Kid suspended for toy gun in (virtual) class

Does this apply? ;-))

SGitR
Acronym for the Smartest Guy in the Room, short for Smartest Guy in the Room Syndrome. The Smartest Guy in the Room has an above-average IQ and knows it; he or she grew up being the smart kid. A SGitR is smart enough to know that s/he's smarter than most people, but not quite smart enough to recognize when s/he encounters other people who are smarter. S/he defaults to the belief that because s/he is smarter than the majority of the population, s/he must be smarter than the people s/he's talking to. When a SGitR is in a room full of smart people, s/he'll continue talking down to and/or correcting them, happily oblivious to the fact that s/he's now in an environment in which s/he is not, in fact, the smartest guy in the room.

Does this apply? No

See, this is the problem, this odd idea that threads are there to be "agreed with". The very opposite of a discussion.

That's a big part of the problem in our country today. Nobody wants to discuss things anymore. Instead, people want the warm fuzzies of going in circles with folks who agree with them, confirming to each other how right they are.

The fact that people can get this uncomfortable with a different view over a situation as trivial as the one here doesn't bode well for trying to talk about serious stuff. Fortunately, forum rules prevent us from testing that ;)

I agree with your first sentence. The second one, not so much.

Your third? Trivial. I couldn't agree at all. We're talking about developing minds and lost rights. Serious stuff.

Okay, so now that everybody has had a chance for some outraged virtue signalling, let's bring this back down to Earth.

Possibly the adjective that fits best . . . . .

con·de·scend·ing | \ ˌkän-di-ˈsen-diŋ \
Definition of condescending
: showing or characterized by a patronizing or superior attitude toward others

No, this is the problem: "Okay, so now that everybody has had a chance for some outraged virtue signalling," The first sentence from your first post. You have no interest in discussion.

Actually, I was the one who started any kind of discussion. Up to my post, everybody said the same thing, some just a bit more witty than others.

Well, since we have your mission statement, and are interested in a discussion: please consider posts 1, 2, 5, 8 and 10. Not seeing the witty.

And while I acknowledge I bring more than my share of snark, I'm quite serious about my original post.

When Covid hit last March, I started working from home. My boss held two online Zoom staff meetings per week. About twelve participants. I was always careful to make sure that I had nothing in camera view that might "offend" anybody....or let people know what I owned, what my hobbies were, etc.

Ya, but your maturity and common sense should be at a much higher level than most 12 year olds.

Mother should have done the following;

1. Set up a camera to record her interactions with the Law Enforcement Officer that showed up at her home.

2. Refuse to consent to allowing the Officer enter the home without a search warrant.

3. Invoke 5th Amendment Right of Avoiding Self Incrimination.

4. Ask direct questions to the Officer such as who made the complaint, etc.

Things have a way of turning out differently when on Candid Camera.

Why isn't this thread locked? #AskingForAFriend

Because its a mostly peaceful protest...:p

Also I no longer care what SOME people think or say.

They probably read The NYT or watch CNN/MSNBC maybe even think they get factual news from some comedian on TV.

Heck, I really gave up reading "smart person" posts years ago. I had some fool tell me I was wrong about buying a truck. How I don't know what I am talking about, making up inflated prices and so on. The problem for him was, I just went to the dealer and had a written quote. I posted the quote from Peterbilt and he thinks its fake...

Lets not get into the operating costs...

Now you ask why, because his friend told him so.

I live in the real world not clown/fake world.

Well, that's sort of become my mission around here:

Prevent this from turning into just another echo chamber of grumpy old farts who want to get worked up about things without letting reality or common sense get in the way too much ;)

Too many other gun forums have gone down that rabbit hole beyond hope.
Let me guess - you're in Portland or one of it's suburbs, right?

Incidentally, the same age as Tamir Rice, who got himself shot to death by police for having a toy gun, and it was found to be "justfied". So I don't think the child angle is terribly convincing here.

Tamir was running about out in public waving his BB gun about. Can't you see the difference to another 12 year old in the privacy (LOL!) of his room with a BB gun on the wall behind him?
I'm debating which is worse grumpy old farts or grumpy young farts.
