King "Cockeyed" Hammer Redux (w/photos)

usnrigger, if that's your first attempt at checkering a hammer, I predict a great future for you in the cosmetic end of gunsmithing! :D That's a good looking job so far. Make sure you publish your business address here as soon as you finish up @ Trinidad... I have a feeling it will be sought after.

Regards,
Froggie

+1 to that,It is nice to see a younger up and comer getting involved with the restoration of classic revolvers.

Well, I was at the machine shop tonight and decided to put a Super Rib on this 44HE. So I have some questions to get started. What is the width of rib? Also was king using his own rear sight or was this from another MFG of the time? What type of sight inserts were used in the front in conjunction with the reflector? what was the reflector made out of? mirror, polished silver? As mush info as I can get will help me get this thing right the first time. This will be on a 6.5" barrel so number of post and the measurement of that spacing?

--Also on the acid talk, we use Toilet bowl cleaner to strip blue. I think it has that same acid in it in diluted form. Im sure its no secret in the Smithing world, but I thought it was some joke when I first was told.

what was the reflector made out of? mirror, polished silver?

This is the one question I can answer; I've observed one worn reflector sight that I owned very closely. It's not a mirror per se, that is, it's not glass. I could see it is a brass base with something plated over it, most likely silver. In the very center the reflective plating had been worn thru apparently from repeated polishing/cleaning.

Thanks hondo, kinda figured it was not a mirror. Pretty sure I'd be swearing up and down trying to cut a little disc out of mirror. I guess I'll just melt down a mercury dime and buff it and silver or soft solder in.

We need an update when possible, with pictures. We love pictures.
