Is it safe to assume that a blued M&P cylinder with an "L" marked on the rear face is supposed to indicate a left hand thread ejector rod, as opposed to the earlier right handed ones?

I believe it does, but there's another way to determine the thread direction. S&W cut a groove behind the knurled tip of the ejector rod to signify left hand threads (blued 29-2). Rods with right hand threads lack the groove (nickel 27).

Thanks. It looks like I'm going to have to buy a couple of rods, and was trying to avoid the whole buy and return thing :(. This raises my odds from 50-50 to 75-25 for getting the right one.:)

Don't be so vague...
Tell us if it's model marked in the yoke cut and post a photo of the end of the ejector rod. We can narrow it down to almost 100% if you give us more to go on....

The item I'm referring to is a cylinder with extractor, not a complete gun; the kicker is that it is in 38S&W, not 38Spl.

Years ago (2013), I acquired from late forum member mchay a .38S&W cylinder and 6" KTR barrel (marked 38 S&W Ctg. 146 gr.) to make a clone of the few K-38s in this caliber - he said had acquired a couple of sets like this from Bill Orr, and had made a clone for himself, and was selling the other, which I purchased with the same intent. It's been sitting a while....

Fast forward 11 years, and I have since acquired 2 more cylinders and 2 more 6" target barrels in unused condition, and have seriously decided to go on with the project. In looking for a donor gun, I was just trying to figure out whether a post '61 gun would work, or whether a pre- '61 donor would be necessary without having to disassembly an existing Model 14's cylinder to obtain a rod to check it.

The strange thing is all 3 cylinders (and barrels) are polished blue, and all the cylinders are "L" marked, with the much smaller bevel on the flutes' front edge. The original .38S&W guns were in the K80,000 range, which would be right hand thread extractors and likely would have a more pronounced bevel, and perhaps a less-polished blue. I'm guessing that maybe these cylinders were for Model 11 repair/replacements? The data on the Model 11s is very sparse in the SCSWs, all 4 Editions.

The barrels may just have been spares, also, but Model 11s were fixed sight 4" guns with barrels marked for .38 S&W Ctg. 178 gr. .
