Lack of interest in 40 SW yet 10MM is getting popular??

I have yet to have a revolver fail. I have shot thousands of 40 rounds over the last 30 yrs. I have had semi autos jam double feed etc. As far as the 10mm room to load hotter. They have. To what avail? There are 40 loads listed at 1050 or higher. What does 150 fps and 20 grs of bullet weight get you? I have shot deer,pigs, even a cow. All cast lead at 1,000 fps or less. Trend is just put a bullet in the case for a gun not desigined for that bullet weight. Semi autos are tied to ammo and function.

I've had a couple of revolvers fail. All were ammo related.

I've got thousands of rds in USPSA matches, 3 Gun matches & steel plate matches. I used 3-4 different guns over the years, all were 100%.

Last I looked, pigs, cows & deer neither shoot back nor take cover behind steel doors or cars. Thugs do, which is where the 10mm shines with the extra HP.

Cor-bon shows their 165gr 10mm as follows:

• Muzzle Velocity: 1250 fps
• Muzzle Energy: 573 ft-lbs

Cor-bon shows their 165gr .40 as follows:

• Velocity: 1150 fps
• Energy: 485 ft-lbs

That's a pretty good leap in energy there, IMO. I'll take that when car windshields & other hard objects come into play.

Not really.

It asks why the .40 was waning & the 10mm picking up steam & people are on both sides of it (big surprise there! LOL)

For a long time, the Delta & Glock 20/29 were about the only 10mm options. Now, there's all sorts of options, both striker & 1911-style. Heck, even FN & Springfield are making them and, more importantly, selling them!

Ask any gun shop owner & he'll tell you quickly that the .40 is a far, far distant seller from other calibers.

The 10mm is a reasonably packable high powered handgun. I have a 6" Dan Wesson. It's big, but slim. Works well as my hunting handgun. I'd certainly carry it for defense, but it's a bit tough to hide.

I enjoy the 40S&W and 10mm and reload for both. Toting 15+1 rounds of energetic 10mm rounds is very compelling to me.

10mm is being recognized for its 357mag power in a semi.

But I confess, this is my favorite 10mm handgun:





I find them both equally amenable to handloading.

10mm is supposed to be more amenable to handloading than 40 S&W. I suspect that is the attraction.

Loves me some 10mm, hate the .40.

Let me say first, I'm not a reloader. I have been told that there's no such thing as +P .40. Someone correct me if I'm wrong there.

But I've also been told that there's room in the 10mm loadings to safely run up the velocity a decent bit.

When I shoot steel plates with one of my 10mm guns, the plates react a LOT more violently over both .45acp & 9mm. In short, they're just wicked, wicked fun to shoot reactive targets with.

How does the 10mm impact on the plates compare to a full-powered 357 Magnum?

I do not own a 10mm but have shot several belonging to range patrons who are serious hunters and use them for hunting. They are nice and accurate and function well, I just don't need the extra power (and recoil) for punching paper and dinging steel. And I don't hunt so will stick to my "regular' calibers.

A 10mm G20 makes some sense for fishermen / hunters in big bear country, a 200 grain hard cast at 1180 is controllable and like it or not the G20 packs a lot of firepower with reliability.

Fads and fashion drive the market to a great degree.
The .40 S&W was oversold and time has shown it is not really more lethal than the 9mm Parabellum.
Part of the 10mm resurgence is due to knowledgeable outdoor types realizing it has enough penetration for heavier animals while offering more rapid and accurate follow-up shots than heavy revolvers for 95% of shooters.
Part is likely fad, fashion and cool.

The 10mm higher capacity semi auto has come on strong the last 2-3 years. It is now recognized as a good back up round when thinning the wild pig horde. Pigs have tough skin over their vitals, making the 10mm a great choice for expected or chance encounters with them.

So the FBI dropped the 40 SW and then of course people no longer were interested. Everything is high cap 9mm
Yet, it seems many are now getting into 10mm?
I don't get it?

Most people don't get things because that is how they think.

Bill Jordan had said that the 38 Special will do for most people. The 9mm is similar and will do for most people too.

From my Law Enforcement perspective most people will be better served with what works for them. Examples are people who think they must have a 1911 and cannot handle it even in 9mm. Or a revolver because I have seen some sad YouTube videos.

Interest in .40 SW is probably waining due to improved ballistics of 9 mm with greater capacity. OTH, 10 mm gives you hot .357 M performance in an auto loader. Moreover, that performance is cited in a 4" barrel, not 8-3/8" as for .357. 10 mm is a popular choice for backup in bear country. Recoil is easily managed in a 28 oz M&P, Glock 20 or 42 oz 4" SW 610.

Uhmmmm, yeah, yes there is.

The Desert Eagle in .44mag is a wonderful option.

The S&W .460 & .500 both put the .44 mag to shame. Reloaders tell me shooting a .500 special load (rather than magnum) is just super, super fun as well.

For the record, I love my Model 29 Classic.

I'd never get rid of my 629's, even though I really like my S&W 460 Magnum

I have a 3rd Gen model 4006 chambered in 40 S&W and as I do for all my firearms, except 22lr, I reload for it.
Though it's fun to shoot, ballistically the 40 S&W round isn't that different from 45acp and I only bought it because I love 3rd Gen pistols.
And since I also shoot and reload for .357 magnum I don't feel any need for a 10mm as the two calibers are also very similar ballistically.

Big boys and there toys ! Carry what you Hope to be fast enough with and accurate enough with if ever needed and do not assume one shot will get the job done .

Fear the old person still very good with a 22lr semi auto pistol .

Was in sw Montana a few years back fly fishing. Asked a couple of locals what they carried in bear country when fly fishing. Both said 10mm Glocks. I transitioned a small department from revolvers to .40 caliber Glocks back in the 1990s.i carried a Model 23. They have since transitioned to 9mm Glocks. I retired 10 years ago.

How do you figger that????........Same cartridge...Just different lengths.......Your excuse is one I haven't heard before......Been loading 40 since 1989 when it came out
