Lady Rents a HK MP5 and Walks Out the Door With It.

I'm at a loss to figure out who was dumber here:

- the lady using her dead sister's ID, given that her relationship to the owner of the ID would make her an automatic and easy to identify and locate person of interest; or

- the owner of the shop, so lacking in imagination that he'd not only let people take the full auto weapon to the range area unaccompanied, but also do so when they have to exit the building to an uncontrolled and unsupervised area to get to the range.

Lots of ignence to go around here. (yeah I made that up).

I am sure they are going to change a rule or two after this. But if the employee had followed the rules in place this would not have happened. Picked up my 617 today at one and the place was pretty full of retired military, which probably makes up 90% of their customer base. Comparing this range to the other two ranges I visit, this one has four times the amount of employees the other two have combined.

Based on this explanation, what are we missing? What rule did he break and how would the employee have prevented the theft?

From the above linked article:

"The staff member who also rented out the firearm didn't follow the policy in place to prevent theft's like this from occurring. Felker said the employee accepted cash from the woman instead of a credit card for the transaction. Staff also later realized the I.D. card, which is kept in exchange for a rental, did not belong to the woman and wrote fake information on the liability form."

The cash versus credit card issue isn't a cure all. If her dead sister had a not yet expired credit card that matched the ID, she still would have succeeded as she clearly looked a lot like her sister, even before we get into issues of inter racial learning of facial recognition markers, etc.

As an aside, I was a civilian instructor on a SAC base and on the first day of class I and three other instructors car pooled. I drove and collected and handed the USAF issued IDs to the airman at the gate, he checked them against his list of approved civilian staff, handed them back, and let us one base. I handed the IDs to the front seat passenger who handed them back to everyone.

We drove separately for the subsequent classes, with an airman checking my ID each time I entered. Four months later I got a call from an SP at the gate as someone had my ID and was attempting to enter. I took the ID out of my wallet and noted it belonged to another instructor - a black female. I asked him it was a black woman and he confirmed that was the case. I told him I'd be right there with her ID card. That mean it took four months before anyone noticed that a white guy and a black woman had the wrong ID cards. I'm positive butts were chewed. It's also the last time I ever accepted an ID being handed back to me without verifying it was actually mine.

Based on that experience with multiple SPs failing to notice such a glaring difference between ID pictures and the bearers' facees - on a SAC base with nuclear weapons - I'm inclined to cut the employee some slack about failing to notice a difference between the accused and her sister.

Lotta shoulda woulda coulda here. In NC can't enter ABC (Alcoholic Beverage Control) store with sunglasses on? Imagine been lotta robberies with Covoid mask disguise? Where there's a will, there's a way even for stupid folk it seems!

She ought to be kept in the hoosegow until she divulges the location of that gun...

If we were serious about stopping firearm violence, we would have a mandatory death penalty for aggravated gun theft.

She should be given the option of the mercy of the gallows if she divulges where the weapon is.

I was assigned to the 8th TFW at Kunsan AB, Korea in 76-77. I was in aircraft maintenance and a coworker friend of mine and I would often go out on jobs together. He was black and I am white. We would routinely swap flight line access badges before driving through the entry point. We were always waved through and on our way...
Well, guess we were obviously not North Koreans!

When I used to check IDs (bouncer), if I had doubts, I would often ask "Whats your birthday"? There should never be any hesitation on that. While I know my brothers and sisters BDs, I have to think a second. Same goes for address. Young women traded IDs way more than guys did.

We don't need to get quite that extreme. However we do need to enforce the gun laws that are on the books.

For example there are many states and some federal laws that impose sentence enhancements when a gun is used in the commission of a crime and/or separate gun possession laws that carry their own felony prison sentences.

However, upwards of 90% of all criminal cases are resolved via a plea bargain and nearly all state's attorneys and prosecutors will plea the case put by dropping those possession charges and sentence enhancements in exchange for a guilty plea for the original crime.

It's a win for the legislatures/politicians as they can claim to be tough on gun crime by passing those laws.

It's also a win for the state's attorneys and prosecutors as they can claim to be tough in crime with a high conviction rate, and push a lot more cases through the system in a given amount of time.

Even law enforcement agencies potentially score a win with higher clearance rates (if you don't count criminals being back on the street sooner, and more criminals not seeing any downside to carrying a gun and subsequently shooting officers).

We need to fully enforce the laws we already have on the books rather than enact new ones, and/or pursue more pointless gun control.

I was at that range Friday. The MP5 was recovered and is being held as evidence and the thief is still in the slammer. I couldn't get any details about how or where the MP5 was recovered.

Well since she has been arrested and charged with theft it means the gun is evidence and in the custody of the Court. This means the Judge in the case will determine the final disposition of the gun after the Court proceedings. Can a Judge that doesn't believe in private ownership of full-auto weapons order that it be destroyed?

Can you post a link to the statute prohibiting entering an ABC store while wearing sunglasses?

If I am wearing contacts (for distance vision) outside, I will be wearing my prescription progressive reader sunglasses. If I am not wearing them, I cannot read the labels, credit card machine, etc.

If I am wearing my prescription glasses and no contacts they will have silver halide lenses that darken in the sun and they'll be dark when I enter and for a couple minutes after.

I rarely go in an ABC store, the last time was 2020, but I'm clearly in violation of that statute unless there are some exceptions allowed for prescription lenses.

It would have been smarter to stage a fake "robbery" in the parking lot to relieve her of the MP5 as she walked to the range.

I ALWAYS wear a billed cap when firing or being around fired semiautos, indoors or out. I once had a hot 9mm cartridge case drop down between my glasses and cheek. NOT a fun time!

Well, that's a wholly separate matter than the actual subject of the stolen weapon but I can agree with Muley, I never shoot semi-autos, pistols or rifles, without a "billed cap", AND long sleeves, and always wearing long pants and socks.

I have seen and experienced too many incidents of hot brass landing on the wrong place of a person's body - it's never pretty.

When I shot Service rifle competition I wore a boonie hat to not only prevent someone else's brass from ending up between me and my shooting glasses but also to prevent brass from someone else's rifle getting down the back of my shirt.
