"Last Ditch" Revolver

However, the 629 is the gun on my desk right now as I type this if trouble should arise.

WOW! Wouldn't a spam filter be easier on the monitor? :D

Interesting thread, especially the comments about availability of the 38/357 ammo. I'm finding locally that 38 is no where to be found. 357 is a little better, but 9mm and 40 S&W are everywhere.

Just found mine today. 681 should fill the bill.

my "last ditch" revolver would be a 2 1/2", or 3" 66/19. it would be a backup for a .45 Gl*** with lots of spare loaded hi-cap mags. if the .45 ammo was to run out, the revolver would definately be the last ditch firearm...when that ammo runs out, it's rocks :D

I'd have to say a Model 66 with 3" tube. A picture of one. Not mine, but just like the one I had before the boating accident.

oh no, please don't say that it sank to the bottom...

If I had to bugout with some revolvers I would have on my 58 on the hip, 442 Pro in the pocket an a NAA mini revolver tuck away somewhere. I've got over 1000 rds of .41 loaded and an ample supply of .38 also. A Ruger .357 Blackhawk with dual 9mm cyclinder would be a nice cached weapon.

My M19, 4" in my cross draw, my Colt Compact on my strong side, my M29 8/38" on the seat beside me, my 617 6" in the glove box. My FAL on the back seat, just in case. Rest of my guns-n-ammo in the trunk til I get to the cave. If there's any room left...the wife.

C&L, your polished pistol began life matted? I had heard the grits required to smooth it out can soften the lettering...wives tale? I was thinking about doing my new 617 6". Perhaps I should just sell it...

Thanks

Last ditch would be a M65 with a M642 backing that up. I carried an auto for the last 14 years of my career because they took my 686 and replaced it with a 9mm. Now I'm retired and can carry what I want so it's a revolver. I always carried some sort of J frame when off duty.

The last one I let go is my 66-1 2.5". They'll find both me and it in the ditch.

Mod. 10 4" heavy barrel SB w/ Uncle Mike's Boot grips. Holds up to +P ammo. What I grab when things go bump in the night. Second choice is my 1950 vintage M&P 4" RB w/ T-Grip. Maybe not with +P's' but points great and DA pull like greased glass!
The finish on these two aren't pretty, but I have less than $350 in the pair. They're out there people, you just have to look.

Evening, Friends,

For me, it would have to be a M657 .41 Magnum, either 3" or 4". I have both and love them. They fit my hand, are exceedingly accurate, fairly easy to shoot, even with heavy loads, and have loads that will do what is needed, without too much trouble. I feel very comfortable with either one of them, or better yet, BOTH!! ;):D Take care, and God Bless!

Every Good Wish,
Doc Mark

Lots of interesting choices. For me, it would have to be the one designed as a heavy duty workhorse, a model 28 with 4-inch barrel.

A metal .223 ammo can holds 105 loaded moonclips in five hardboard-separated layers of 21. I have two such full - and 30-odd more moonclips - in my office. I also have a Real Deal Brazil 'Tarp Hat', a la Woody Harrelson sports in 'Zombieland'. I'm ready. Okay, I need some time to get the 625JM out of the safe, where it - like my other fun/plinker revolvers - resides. The chapeaux was bought to keep the sun off my neck - and because it's available in XXL for my nearly size 8 noggin... then I heard about the movie!

I carry either my 3" or a 4" M-65. When thats feels like too much then its a 642 or a 638. I carried a M-19/ M686 for half my career, I switched to an auto when they made em. When I retired, I switched back.

To answer OP's "Last Ditch" = hideout gun...
642and6812.jpg

small: 642 w/5 .38 Spl. +P larger: 681 w/7 .357 Mag. largest (for me): AR-10

3" Model 65 for a great balance of size and performance. The ability to fire .38's and .357 Mag is a big plus as well...

My regular work weapon is a Browning HP, my BUG is a 940 and I carry 2-3 extra moon clips. I can also thumb load the 940 from the BHP mag of the BHP goes Tango Uniform.
My daughter drives F-18s off a big boat, she carries the issue M9(Beretta 9mm), but she is also packing (my extra) 940 which she carries in a holster sewed into her survival vest, she packs several extra moon clips (as well as 3 extra M9 mags. The moon clips ride in a aluminium tube that fits them perfectly that a Machinists Mate ginned up for her. She also packs a S&W auto knife, that she can sharpen to a razor edge, and a Randall #2 that I gave her when she got her wings.
Her brothers (also military aviators) theorize that the way to end any war quickly would to get her on a bad PMS day and drop her behind enemy lines, then just wait for the enemy to come running to surrender.
In any case the 940 is obviously my choice, if I were carrying other than a 9mm "big" gun, then I might think of a revolver that shot that cartridge, or a 640 in .38 special if matching calibers wewre not possible.
