Latest Dog Project

Dang, Bill....I dunno if Frannie was good with pups or not. Heck! That was 45 years ago!!! How am I supposed to remember that kind of stuff? I can't even remember what I had for breakfast this morning!!!:D

PLOTT HOUNDS

Plott Hounds I believe were bred to hunt Boar, and these days Bear. Started in North Carolina I think. Could be the State dog there. A sad note, I saw one at a shelter in W.VA a couple years ago. Seems that over there, if they don't hunt to suit them, they are just left to get by on their own. My first induction to one was one I spotted in Gander Mt. one day, being lead around by some gal about 80 years old. Seems he had been left to fend for himself ---- Bad business that. Iris looks to be a happy pup. good for you. :)

Yeah, I'm afraid that even if Iris doesn't work out on cougar or bear, she still has a permanent home here at the ol' homestead.

Right now, finding stuff is a game for her. Who knows? If she keeps going the way she is now, she might even work out as a search-and-rescue dog. I'm not too worried about it one way or the other though. At this stage in the game, she's my pal, no matter what. She likes to go into town with me to pick up the mail. She likes to roll on the lawn and let me scratch her belly and maybe share my sandwich.

It makes me sick to hear how some so-called "houndsmen" treat their dogs. I guess I'm just not as serious as some of those guys. My dogs are my buddies first. If they're also good at something else...well, that's just like a cherry on top of the hot fudge sundae...and extra bonus.

Thanks for the comments, folks. I'm glad you like her.:)

I couldn't agree more. Most of the best trainers of field trial and bird dogs learned long ago that half-starving and ignoring them to keep them lean and all business is not the best approach. But you couldn't tell that to the old-timers I knew.

Look at the way K-9 police officers interact with their dogs. Most of the ones I've seen keep their four-legged partners at home with their families; but every one I've seen work is lavish with praise for the dog when he does his job well. As a result the dogs are ready and willing to die for their handlers, and sometimes do.

You have a real win-win situation (a phrase I hate because it's so overused, but it fits) with Iris. You and she are big winners however it plays out.
