Police only ammo

Here's some old "Police Use Only" stuff.

I've got one of these in .357 Mag., too, but it's still sealed and I'm not breaking it.

Are those KTW rounds.

Legal to own?

Just curious.

Yes, they're KTWs and legal in Michigan. The law on them varies by state.

Owning and shooting AP's is legal. It's the manufacture and selling of them that gets the Fed's upset.

I believe there are some states where mere possession of "AP" ammo is illegal.

You can buy & shoot any ammo you want. All you have to do is to find a place to buy it. All I carry in my guns are LEO ONLY ammo that is available from a multitude of places.

Other than the armor (vest) piercing ammo marked Police Only, which is illegal in some states, the other LE ammo Ive seen is marked Law Enforcement Ammunition, NOT LAW ENFORCEMENT Only, .
I always laugh when I get calls for the statute number for possession of LE ammo.
I think is more of a marketing thing, LE ammunition marked ammo comes in 50 rd boxes, where alot of the high end defense ammo in stores come in 25 rd boxes and is more expensive.
As for not seeing it in stores. When a company gets an order for 4 million rounds from say the Mounted Police, they generally call their steady contracts , govt agencies etc, and advise them they better buy their ammo now, or have enough on hand, cause for the next 6 months we are only producing .40 for so and so. The retail stores that only order a few thousand at a time are left out.
Seems like the current trend (last 5 years or so) is to lessen the power of alot of the LE ammo ,(LOW RECOIL) slugs, buck, sub-sonic, due to ummm, complaints from officers of excessive recoil, injuries and inability to shoot accurately.
Personally cant wait until I can actually carry some good ol real 357, in my guns. Like the rest of you.!!!!!!

It is true that the Prohibition started showing up on boxes of +P+ ammunition made in the 1970's. I have some Winchester 9mm +P+ 115 gr Jacketed-Controlled Expansion Q4174 marked LE Use Only Not For Reatail Sales.
But since then Ammunition manufacturers have learned that they can sell 20 round boxes to consumers sucessfully at higher prices.
Law Enforcement demands large quantities of ammunition in 50 round boxes, packed 500 or 1000 to the case. They also want competative pricing, therefore the 50 round LE boxes cost about the same usually as the 20 round consumer boxes.
Ther is also matching LE practice ammuntion available also at a substantial savings.
The prohibition against selling ammunition marked LE is still adhered to by most retail stores but on line just about everything is available and with an FFL, all of it except for some esoteric rounds I won't name.
It's all marketing thes days and there is no difference between the Civilian and LE ammunition from the same maker except for some esoteric rounds.-Dick

THIS...

It's all about money. They want to sell 20 round boxes to the public, yet need to stay competitive to get the LEO contracts.

Another thing... the story about the +P and not wanting to blow up civilian guns is kind of a farce (or more likely, a lawyer-fearing solution that came before a problem). Most American ammo, by design, is loaded with less powder than the European stuff. Seriously. Heck, even basic NATO ammo made by Winchester, for example, is considered (and labeled) +P. So what you're buying as +P from the big manufacturers in the USA is pretty much standard fare for European makers.

The US ammo manufacturers are so fearful of lawsuits that they water our ammo down. Oh, that, and it saves money on powder.

It's also my experience that the +P+ stuff is a marketing gimmick. You might gain something like 10 to 20fps with the +P+ loads from the main manufacturers.
