Let's see those Highway Patrolmen

My safe queen (no dash S2142xx), I have a shooter (28-2 Police trade-in), not as nice condition.

I have another 28-2 4", but she is not a pristine as the one in my original post. She sure does shoot just fine though. What's the old adage don't worry about a little dust on the bottle.....

You're all making me jealous...

A 4" 'S' serial M28 is on the 'short list'... just haven't found the right gun at a price I'm willing to pay yet.

I might consider jumping in soon. These are not going to go down in value anytime soon. They have been discovered for the value that they are

other than two Black Powder replica's I bought in the early '70's, I only have one revolver, a 28-2. This past summer I dropped by the Cabela's just south of Charlotte, and wandered, as I usually do, thru the Gun Library. I have bought several other firearems there in the past few years. Saw this really nice 4 inch S&W, looked unused and unworn to me, so bought it, for $600 or so. I reload 38 sp for it, and enjoy shooting it a lot, & letting others have a go at it. I got a holster from El Paso, and found some snake loads, so it will be my firearm when I go Indian point and pottery hunting in the local creeks.

It really is a nice pistol, and fits my big hands and long fingers just fine. I recently got some new 357 cases, and plated 158 grains, and will set about making some of those up for it.

Shooting 1911 and other pistols for over a half century, shooting a big revolver is ver different.

I tend to be pretty lucky over the years with my impulse shopping finds.

Sol here is my only modern revolver. SF VET

Something like this?

My choice for a working gun.
Smooth PC magnas.

This is the one I grab for the woods.
It has a white ramp front sight and WO rear one.
I bring the dog a lot and the sights would work well if a bear or coyote was not behaving.
Quick accurate sight picture and a cover shirt conceals it perfectly.

Here are my three. A 1967 model 28-2 and two 1954 Highway Patrolman. I pretty much shoot everything I own, but the 1st year 6" is almost perfect, and it has yet to go to the range.

Are there any variations of the Model 28 that have a ribbed rear sight assembly, or are all of them fully smooth on top?

Just cant beat an N frame smith. The diamond magnas are timeless in my opinion. I am on the hunt for a model 27 also. Just haven't had the opportunity to adopt one yet.

If you have a M28, you just gotta find a M27. Like Forrest said, they go together like peas and carrots. My M28-2 is from 1973, my M27-2 is from 1977:

They are all smooth. If I remember correctly, it's the only N frame finished that way. Both the barrel rib and the frame portion are matte finish with no grooves or checkering. Less machine work and hand finishing=lower price, for the law enforcement crowd, where the departments had to buy a lot of them, or the individual, fairly low-paid cop had to buy his own. A far cry from the very nicely checkered top strap and barrel rib of the M27:
