Lets see your deer slaying revolver

I've never hunted with my 4 inch Mountain Gun .44 Mag but may take it in the woods this year. I have some interested in the 329PD as an even lighter belt gun. What did you practice with load, routine? I plink occasionally at 90 plus yards at a 12 inch steel gong but don't do off hand

I just practiced with 240gr hollowpoints. It's not a gun you want to practice with all day but I would shoot half a box at each practice session. Putting on the x-frame grip helped alot with recoil. It's a great carry gun. I didn't even feel the recoil when I shot that deer.

Good shooting! How far did the deer travel? By the looks of it, not very far.

Thanks for the recovered bullet photo! I have yet to recover a .44 bullet from a deer. They have all exited, some after traversing almost the full body length.

Here is my 629 Light Hunter Plus and the Buck I harvested with it last year. Hornady 240gr XTP handloads shoot inside 3.5 inches at 100 yards.

Thank you. Lots of practice over the years. I have found that the 44 mag doesn't need to be loaded hot for deer. The Hornady XTP 240 will open up as low as 800fps so I like to load the 240 at 1150fps. Its very accurate out of my gun and doesn't recoil as much. I hunted with the 454 Casull for years only to come back to the 44mag for a reality check.

Bullet was recovered on the opposite hide. The large doe dropped in her tracks with out even a kick.

Mystro - that was an awesome shot. That ATV parked at 175 yards really puts it into perspective. I would be happy with a long gun hit at that distance. Nice graphic illustration BTW.

Yes it is. Started out as a badly neglected Super Blackhawk 7 1/2. The front sight had been cut off and a Marbles rifle sight had been crudely dove tailed into the base the rear sight was missing and the hammer looked like a dog with carbide teeth had been chewing on it.

I sent it to Dave with an ejector rod for a 10 inch SBH. He cut the barrel to the length of the ejector rod. He fit the Bisley parts, did an action/accuracy job, took out the end shake, installed an oversized Bowen #5 base pin and rear target sight and 11 degree cut the forcing cone, made the front sight to my specs and took the warning label off the barrel.

When he was done and it came back to me, I took the grip frame off and sent it to CaryC for some grips. They are black micarta and as you can see in the photo, he hid the escutcheon on the right panel. I love the grips.

The holster is an old Bianchi that I found on ebay.

I had a 5 inch 629 that I really liked alot until I fired heavy loaded rounds in it. The cylinder latch scared my thumb and because of that I let it go. This gun above shoots more accurately and comfortably than my 629 so it gets the nod for hunting now.

Oh, one more thing. When Dave Clements had it he did a lot of detailing on the finish. So much so that when I showed it to one of my gun loving friends he initially thought it was a Freedom Arms.
