Deer season is in full swing here in PA. I plan to take my 629-6 5" Classic with me and hopefully get a deer with it, if I ever can get away from work while its still light out. My main deer gun is a lever action 44MAG, but I am thinking of going revolver only.

Anyway, lets see the revolver that will ride along on your deer hunt this season and maybe bag a deer for you.

Hope to use this one to take a deer down here, soon.

Used this one in the season recently completed here in MN -
S&W Model 29-2, 250 gr. Keith LSWC, 19 gr. 2400. Carry it in a Simply Rugged Loaded Pancake holster using the Chesty Puller rig.

Nice looking weapon. What grips are those?

How do you like the Chesty Puller rig? I have a hankering for a chest holster. Been seriously considering the Guides Choice holster from Diamond D Leather. Mulled over the SR Pancake and Chesty Puller rig too.

here's my 2013 western WA Muley. Per the regs he's in a Blacktail unit but.....

629-4, 250 gr Mt Baldy SWC, 19 gr 2400, COL = 1.71

you had asked for a picture of the revolver so adding that!

That is a dandy looking deer and weapon. I can't wait to get out this weekend and chase the elusive Whitetail. What grips is that 629 wearing?

The grips are Ahrends Retro Target stocks in Cocobolo. They are a tad bit slimmer and fit my hand for shooting better than the original stocks, so they stay on the 29-2 and my 686 during hunting season. I can't stand the look of rubber stocks on a nice blued S&W revolver.

The Chesty Puller rig and pancake from Simply Rugged work just great. I've been very pleased with them both. I did the same as you are, also looked at the Guides Choice, but went the SR route because I have done business with Rob before and have nothing but praise for his work and service.

this one;

1960's 29-2 6.5"

No pics of it and a deer yet, never took it. Perhaps this weekend.

hey thanks! The grips are Herrett Jordan Troopers, I think I'm remembering it correctly from several years ago. They're based off the design Bill Jordan had them make for the Combat Magnum.

good luck on that wiley Whitetail!

I have a Diamond D Guides Choice and it's a very nice holster. I think they are just perfect for a 4-5 inch N Frame. Another option is a Haugen Handgun Leather Magnum Rancher Carry Model. Also,El Paso Saddlery has a Tanker model that fits the bill nicely.

You're sure about this? 'Cuz it's quite hideous right now:

It's even worse with the taped-up JPoint rain cover. Poor old 657 Classic Hunter is being given every opportunity to take a deer, but it's dry spell is going on about 8 years now! It shoots extremely well, except at critters...If I believed in jinxes and such, I'd say that this revolver has had a big one!

The brown camo Krylon paint comes off easily enough, BTW.

The .44s have done well enough, but I've been a .41 Magnum fan for much longer. At least in theory and at the range, for whatever that's worth!
