It looks to be a neat gun, I sort of find it temping. It has a guarded rear sight with blonde wood grips, $650 seems quite high to me. I should have asked if he had the original box, but I also didn't want to tempt myself too much. I would like to know, what's the reasoning for such a huge guard? I talked to my brother in law about the gun, he said, he believes S&W still makes a few of their old style DA/SA semiautos for certain police departments.

I do believe the production has ended on the third generations. I think that price does seem steep unless perfect example with original box etc. Sights like these adjustibles?

Yep, except I was Stainless. I would like to know what it the purpose for the flange around the sight.

The wings guarded the adjustable rear sight. $650 does seem high, but how often have you seen one? Nice examples of these guns are going up. It is still less than the new old stock 3914 mentioned in a thread earlier today.

It's a fantastic pistol. Mine is a 539, the blued steel variant. It's my favorite 9mm. They sure don't make 'em like this anymore.

That price does seem high, but maybe that's just cause I'm a bargain hunter. It could have the original box and "stuff." I have seen them sell for that much, and actually more.

They are great pistols, and will always have the interest of S&W collectors. Even with those (ugly,) wings. :D

I like the 2nd gen Model 639 with the rounded trigger guard and fixed sights better than the large rear sights. I picked one up a couple of years ago and is one of my favorites. I like the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd gen all steel models for going to the range.

The wing protector is quite an overkill. I thought, maybe it has a special scope to mount to it, which would also be an overkill for a 9mm. I'll go back to see if it has the box and the accessories. If it does it might be worth $1000- 1200 in the near future, estimating by collecting trends. I have 4 9mm pistols. It isn't my favorite cartridge.

I lucked into this one a few years back for $400 - probably valued north of $650 today - young man inherited it from his father and had no use for it - I certainly do.
