LGS REFUSAL

Some gun stores have online shopping using Davidsons. They do not want to compete with large volume sites like Bud's.

As a courtesy to the store that I deal with, I check their price first and if it is not too much more, I will buy from them. I normally use the local store for transfers for older guns that I buy from gunbroker like the 1969 vintage .357 3-screw Blackhawk that I recently bought. The store gets my business for new stuff and has no problem when I buy an older gun online.

It's a 2-way street. My LGS was listed by Bud's as approved the first gun I bought and not the second time. Quien sabbe? Bud's undersells some shops because they can get in volume, etc, etc. So they are competitive. Some dealers don't like that. One sale with Bud's took a few days, the other a couple of weeks.

^^^^^^^ +1 for this ^^^^^^^

I always give a LGS the opportunity to get me out the door at equal to or maybe 5% or so over the cost of doing business with an on-line retailer. It only makes sense; these small shops have a tough time competing with the giant retailers on new gun prices. If they are going to have to stay in business by doing a lot of transfers instead of selling a lot of guns, look for transfer prices to be higher.

So - if I am looking at a $500 handgun (shipping included) from an on-line retailer & it will cost me ~$25 +tax ($26.63 in my neck of the woods) to have it transferred, I'll give a LGS the business if I can get it for $553 or so out the door (OTD). Considering that includes sales tax, that would be a retail price of ~$520. That, to me, is a good price to pay to be able to go to a local brick & mortar LGS, discuss the purchase, handle the gun I want to buy, & foster a relationship with a local business.

Never ordered a gun from the web. I have bought all from my local stores and one pawn shop. Problem with that is BUD'S is one of my local shops. So I don't really know what it is like to have to buy from online.

We call our LGS Buds South!:D

No problem with Buds, my guy will take their transfers all day,

Folks come it and see he has the same gun for less, and now has to pay a transfer fee and could have bought it right there and walked out!:)

When the Mosins were hot, he was getting so many transfers from Buds and he had racks of them, again for less than Buds!

Buds sells so many guns that under their LEO discount they can not sell S&W guns in Florida. So many retired LEOS in FL.
Not their rule but SW cut them off saying they hurt the Fl dealers (some dealer whined I guess)

I have never heard of any problems with Bud's. The probable reason is Bud's "under-prices" everyone else, and most dealers don't like to accept any transfers from them if they sell the same merchandise.

I have purchased three handguns and my son has purchased two handguns from Bud's. No issues on any of the transactions.

Your LGS must have had issues somewhere in the past! OR heard of a guy who's friend had a problem.

But, like you said; it is his store!!

I really like my LGS, but their outrageous $100 transfer fee is another reason that I just do not buy online. BUds offerings often look good to me.

An old song comes to mind: "My mama told me, You better shop around"!

I never dealt with Buds although I've noted their good prices and am glad to hear most here have had good results with them. I'd ask your dealer why they don't deal with them and find another if you wanted to purchase from Buds. My guess too is they had bad dealings with them before.
I purchase at my dealers when possible and don't mind paying slightly more to deal with his product I can handle and check out before purchase. He'll do transfers for me and also package and ship for me too at reasonable rates. I bought my new Ruger 1911 from him in December for about what it would have to cost to buy online and pay for transfer. I got instant gratification and he made a sale. He also calls me when he gets a nice S&W revolver in especially if it's .41 mag.

Bud's is one of the biggest online presences out there.

I'm not sure why your LGS would have a problem dealing with them.

Maybe because Buds beat his prices.

I have never ordered from Bud's but I am on there alot looking at stuff. When checking on prices it is the first place I go, figuring more money for local.

They have a section that will find local stores for you, some are preffered and some list the price. One local to me was only $10, though most $25.

$100 traansfer is the reason I would find another store, and shop on line.

It can be hard in small areas though. I want to move back home where there is only one LGS and Walmart. I wouldn't be surprised that the dealer gouges.

You're missing my point. The OP has stated he wasn't going to by from his LGS anyway. So even if Bud's beats the LGS's prices(and they probably do)why would the LGS refuse to deal with Bud's & at least get a transfer fee? It sounds like sour grapes & is an excellent example of cutting your nose off to spite your face.

The LGS I used to work at had a couple of problems with how Bud's shipped. Occasionally Bud's would drop ship from a wholesaler instead of their warehouse. If the wholesaler had a presence in the same state as the LGS he would be required to charge sales tax, but the customer had already ordered and paid for the gun, so the owner had to eat the tax. After a couple of times he stopped taking transfers from Bud's too.

I have purchased firearms and accessories from both Bud's Gun Shop and their sister store Bud's Police Supply. No problems at all and the prices were good. Living in a rural area where pickings are often slim, Bud's fills a niche. Beats driving 40 miles to the nearest mid-size town only to find they don't have what your looking for or finding high prices because they are the only place for miles that has what you are looking for.

For public or private officers with credentials, Bud's Police Supply offers steep discounts on many firearms and accessories without the hassle of trying to get the discount straight from the mfg.

I have delt with Bud's with no problems, But this time last year when Bud's jacked up their prices on AR's, my LGS Stopped accepting transfers from them. May have something to do with it.
